I am using excel 2007, on occasion when i try to select any one cell it will highlight and select multiple cells. Once this occurs it happens with every cell I click on.

I have heard, but cannot confirm, that some people with this problem have found that altering the zoom level (slider in lower right corner of Excel window) gets the multiple seelction to go away

Ok, I fixed mine by going off 110% Zoom. When my Zoom is set at 110% it selects two cells. I tried multiple other Zoom conditions and it worked (selected one cell) every time except at 110%. Whomever, told me to try the zoom/magnification level -THANKS!

exactly, thank you. Somewhere in this thread i explain exactly how to reproduce this problem, thus explaining how to prevent it. It simply has todo with screen positioning while in layout mode. I believe this issue has been revolved in office 2016

Are you using a Laptop? If so, your issue may be a common one laptop users have; it happens to me multiple times every day. If it's suddenly selecting multiple cells AND when you move your mouse/cursor, it continues to select more, hit both Shift keys at the same time (sometimes you have to hit both CTRL keys at the same time if the two Shift keys didn't work).
