From a development point of view, it was probably an accidental "fix". A fix or change for something else that had this unintended effect that slipped through testing.

I would contend that Microsoft is beating me into submission by making me change the file names on hundreds of files to get them into the order I once had them in. Every time circumstances warrant a change in order I'm supposed to change a file name, and also change in on four back up devices just because they decided to omit a very useful feature? I know how to change file names, the point is that foir many people like myself, it isn't a little extra work, its a massive job that noone should have to undertake. They may have improved the software in many ways but this certainly wasn't one of them. Obviously until they decide to remedy this situation people will have to change the file names. All we malcontents can do for now is hope for a service pack (by the way I already have the SP2 update for Office 2007) that will enable manuel file movement once again.

OK, I just tried it on Vista and I can recreate the drag and drop manual resorting you describe.  OK, since Win 7 has been "improved", you have to beat it into submission.

For either of your scenarios it just takes a little more knowledge, only a little more effort. Rather than click and drag the file names, rename them.

• click on file name
• <F2> to enter rename mode
• <home> to get to the front of the name
• add a sorting prefix: 001  aaa whatever
• <enter> to save the change
• double click on the name column name bar to reverse and forward sort

I am not saying it is as easy as drag and drop, but it will get what you want done

The main reason I would never use the drag and drop functionality is that it is temporary. As soon as you resort the folder, say by closing and reopening  explorer, the manual sort order is gone.

In Windows 7 a pro Karioke singer or a wedding photographer presses "start, and then choose "Documents" or "Pictures" as the case may be. The photographer gets a phone call from Betty who opens a folder called "Bettys Wedding" and there are 467 photos that have all be named with titles like, Cake with Betty, Mike with Betty, Zack with Betty, Betty with Zack, Betty with Andrea, Betty with Bill Gates etc etc etc. Betty wants to organise the photos so that all the photos with Betty, Mike, Bill and Zack are beside each other neat as a pin while they stand beside the big wedding cake ... and she can't do it! A Karioke singer has 67 songs to sing that all have titles like "Moonlight in Vermont" and Dee's Dilemma, and those songs need to be sung one after another in a certain order that have nothing to do with the alphabet. He doesn't have time to search through 67 songs with an audience hooting and hollaring expecting this poor guy to deliver!

   To day I was at work and had an opportunity to speak with a pro IT guy. He had his laptop at the ready and verified that Windows 7 does not allow a user to manually move files withing a given folder. He said they figured most people didn't need to do that. That may be true but the piano player and me looked at each other and rolled our eyes. The people at Microsoft were short sighted on this issue. In Vista you could move the files manually, all they had to do was include the feature and they didnt do it. Most people may not need the feature or care, but believe me, many people do care and I think they should have been taken into consideration, IMHO.  J BING WU

I suspect that if you use Large Icons maybe you can drag them around in an Explorer window the same way you arrange icons on the desktop?
