personal.xlsb opens when opening a new file

The file personal.xlsb opens every time I open a new file. I saved all my macros in module1 of the new workbook but this personal file keeps opening. I have read that in Excel > Options > Advanced > under General, At startup open all files in is = BLANK will stop this but mine was already BLANK. How do I stop this file from opening?

Thanks,

JCM

Hi,

Persaonal.xlsb opens automatically every time Excel opens provided it has been created.

Writing a UDF wouldn't create P.xlsb unless that UDF was saved to P.xlsb. So at sometime; and maybe no associated with this UDF, someone has saved something to P.xlsb (maybe in error) and caused the creation of that file.

Now it is created I strongly recommend you hide it and forget it but if you don't want to do that then you can delete p.xlsb like this.

With the Excel application not running.

Open windows explorer, and assuming you did a standard installation, navigate to

C:\program files\microsoft office\office 12\xlstart

delete personal.xlsb

personal.xlsb seems to be created when you create a custom macro.

You are given the choice to save a created macro in the current workbook (I presume it is only available then in that workbook)  or available to all workbooks – in which case it seems to go into personal.xlsb.

If you want to see what  macros are in personal.xlsb,

    1.  follow instructions 1-3 above

    2.  click developer tab, macros,  view macros.  To see the full code for all the macros, click edit for any one of them in personal.xlsb.

If you want to keep the macros, just making personal.xlsb read only will get rid of the notifications.

    3.  follow instruction 4 above, right click on the folder in the left navigation pane, click open in new window.  Exit excel.

    4.  now mark personal.xlsb read only (right click, r, r, enter).

    6.  If you don't often use the macros but want to keep them, change the suffix, you don't have to delete it.  I just added to the suffix .xlsb".(my custom macros-delete this suffix to use)".

You will need to remove your custom suffix to execute your created macros.

You will need to remove the read-only attribute and your custom suffix to save or modify any general macros.

Consider saving macros in a specific workbook and saving or using that as a template for workbooks which require that macro.

This was posted a long time ago, but I found this page, so others will to.

I had the 'blank extra page appearing' issue. Followed instructions elsewhere to unhide it, and found it was PERSONAL.XLSB.

But the only two alternatives appeared to be:

Hide Personal.xlsb (in which case a blank Excel window appears), or

Unhide it (in which case a blank worksheet appears)

The trick is to delete Personal.XLSB. But finding it is not easy. Best way is to:

    1. open any xlsx file
    2. close that window, and the blank window will still be present
    3. On that blank window, if there is no worksheet visible, go to View and click Unhide
    4. Now got to File, Save As. This will show you where personal.xlsb is actually stored on your machine (mine was in C:\Users\Neal\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART, but having searched on ther internet, there apprear to be a variety of possible locations)
    5. Having noted down (or copied) the path, cancel the SaveAs and close all excel windows (ignore any save prompt)
    6. Finally navigate to the noted path, and delete Personal.xlsb (and ~$Personal.xlsb if present)

Now nothing extra should appear when you open your next excel file
