I upgraded from Office 2007 to 2010 two weeks ago. Whenever I open up documents in Print Layout View that were created under earlier versions of Word (2000, 2003, 2007), Word replaces several of the fonts with something that looks like Arial bold.Sometimes it changes just the title fonts, sometime the entire body font--it's not always the same phenomenon in each document.
The Font window on the Home tab still shows the name of the original font being used in the document, but the screen does not show that font--it just shows whatever it replaces the font with. Repeat: even though the screen in showing a different font, the Font window on the Tab Screen shows the name of the font the document should be showing.
When I change to Draft View, the fonts all display properly, but I need the correct fonts in the Print Layout to show because the bogus font that Word substitutes throws off the accuracy of what I'm looking at.
Is anyone else having this problem?

I solved this problem by saving the troublesome file in what 2010 calls "compatability mode>"
Eutactic, I finally tried this solution. I really was not comfortable deleting everything under \Office, but after backing up the registry, I gave it a try. So far it seems to have worked. I will be finishing an important project during the week, so I will have daily opportunities to see how this holds up.

I believe I have solved this problem by simply backing up and deleting all the registry values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office. Obviously this is an extreme approach that wiped my preferences, but it appears to have done the trick.
I'm unable to install the Adobe apps right now.
It's interesting that changing the printer rectifies the issue, even temporarily. What do you have set as your default printer? Do you have more than one printer available? If not, what happens if you install another printer driver, such an ink jet or if your default is an ink jet, try a laser jet, and set it as your default? Note you don't need to physically have a printer in order to install a driver.

This sounds remarkably similar to the strange symptom of Words and characters scrunching up together with certain HP printers.
That could be temporarily overcome by switching printers and back or restarting Word.
Check that you have the latest printer driver and if your default printer isn’t a locally connected printer, temporarily test with a local printer set as the default.
Empty your User temp folder: with all applications closed, it should be empty. So preferably after a fresh reboot, go to the temp folder and delete all its contents.
Test to see if the problem is still evident.

Thanks for sending the example file. I wasn't able to reproduce the issue, as previously noted I don't have the fonts installed, but I wanted to see if there was something in the xml that could provide a clue. Since you noted it prints property I didn't expect to find anything, but I still took a look. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Do you have any form of Adobe professional document production tools available to you? Illustrator, for example? Can you install and then re-test?
Since it does appear to be a display issue, have you tried updating your graphics driver? I realize since so many are experiencing the issue that’s not likely the cause but it's something that should be ruled out just to be sure.
I have the most up-to-date display driver.
Another question, after the issue occurs, if you switch to Print Preview does it then display properly, even for a short time?
It seems to be possible to do things which cause it to render correctly on-screen, but I haven't come up with a reproduction scenario for that. But to answer your question directly, the print preview mirrors exactly the print layout view. When the print layout view is correct, the print preview is correct; when the print layout is Arial, the print preview is Arial. Even when the print preview shows Arial, printing does print in the correct fonts.
NEW INFO --> Interestingly, when I go to print preview then CHANGE PRINTERS, the fonts come back correctly. (This seems to have the same effect as if I'd exited Word and then re-launched; if I change the file, save it, then load it, it exhibits the problem again)
