Word 2010 Font Problem: different fonts showing up on screen

I upgraded from Office 2007 to 2010 two weeks ago. Whenever I open up documents in Print Layout View that were created under earlier versions of Word (2000, 2003, 2007), Word replaces several of the fonts with something that looks like Arial bold.Sometimes it changes just the title fonts, sometime the entire body font--it's not always the same phenomenon in each document. 

The Font window on the Home tab still shows the name of the original font being used in the document, but the screen does not show that font--it just shows whatever it replaces the font with. Repeat: even though the screen in showing a different font, the Font window on the Tab Screen shows the name of the font the document should be showing.

When I change to Draft View, the fonts all display properly, but I need the correct fonts in the Print Layout to show because the bogus font that Word substitutes throws off the accuracy of what I'm looking at.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I solved this problem by saving the troublesome file in what 2010 calls "compatability mode>"

Eutactic, I finally tried this solution. I really was not comfortable deleting everything under \Office, but after backing up the registry, I gave it a try. So far it seems to have worked. I will be finishing an important project during the week, so I will have daily opportunities to see how this holds up.

I believe I have solved this problem by simply backing up and deleting all the registry values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office. Obviously this is an extreme approach that wiped my preferences, but it appears to have done the trick.

    Well, considering the replies above, I'm glad I said a "little help," and not, "I fixed it."  :-)

    Kaj and Adam, sorry it didn't help you at all. The problem was so bad for me that I couldn't use anything I was editing because of the spacing issue.This at least made the font quit adding 3/8-1/2 spacing around the substituted font. But the bogus substitution is still there.

    Terry, you asked how the feature became checked. I have a made a few discoveries regarding this vexing issue because I keep trying to find a way to fix it. It is causing serious problems for our staff. My co-administrator is already recommending removing Office 2010 from all our computers and going back to an earlier version of Office. So...this problem is showing up on the following documents so far:

    1.Every document originally made in Word 2002 (we have a LARGE number of these).

    1. The fonts that Word 2010 are having consistent trouble with are OpenType fonts: Adobe Jenson Pro and Adobe Garamond Premier Pro.
    2. I have the <Save> feature in <Save files in this format> set to <Word 97-2003 Document (*.Doc)>
    3. With these settings, EVERY document that I open (and I have thousands of them) has the check box checked .
    4. AND every document I open has this problem.

    Zombie, thanks for staying with the thread. I really think MS has a REAL problem here and someone that has some measure of authority needs to know about it and put somebody on it. As I said above, I imagine hundreds of thousands of documents out there are using Word with fonts that MS didn't produce.

    MICROSOFT : We are asking for help here. We really need someone to take care of your customers. Thank you.

    Do we know whether Microsoft knows about this problem?  Accepts it as a bug?  Plans to fix it?

    I'd say that unfortunately we can't know the answer to that unless someone from Microsoft writes a reply.  Is there an official venue that Microsoft encourages people to use to submit bugs?  I have come to think that these very forums are the closest approximation that we're offered.

    Microsoft doesn't provide a user-facing bug tracking system such that provided by Mozilla for Firefox and Thunderbird.  So we don't really have insight into whether or not they consider this a major issue (though I would say that most of us consider it a major issue--it frustrates my work with documents on a daily basis).

    That and the PDF issue with Type 1 fonts . :)
