I received an email stating Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access. Is this legit or a scam?

i have it set to default on the outlook.com profile, but everyone I open this I am required to provide my password? why?

Please can someone help me! I got the original email from Microsoft months ago so duly downloaded the Outlook app and deleted my email from the iPhone mail icon. Thought I’d done what I supposed to in anticipation of this however today got a reminder email saying I’d lose stuff on the 16th September!

I have followed the instructions and added my hotmail email to my iPhone mail app but don’t know if this will work!

I really just want reassurance it will because I thought I had it sussed with downloading the app!

I was told this is a phishing email.

Also I have seen some messages saying that along with deprecation of the password only basic authentication login being done, that POP and IMAP access will be deprecated as well, and

believe is incorrect, especially for IMAP which is the protocol used by gmail and that would

essentially crash email service for most of the world which seems an unlikely plan. I do also

hope the only thing being deprecated is the basic authentication password only login like

has been used for decades especially for old hotmail accounts, many of which are also POP

or using IMAP. So far, what I have observed is that the basic authentication password only

login is what is being deprecated and the login requirement is being updated to OAuth2.

However, legacy servers that work fine for the legacy basic authentication login using only

a password will not also accept a login change from the client app simply being changed to

the modern authentication OAuth2 because that would be too easy. A different server for

incoming mail must also be selected which will accept an updated login selection OAuth2

that is made in the mail client app. An example I observed applicable earlier this morning

I can describe is a legacy mail server for old hotmail accounts pop3.live.com / port 995

that still accepts basic authentication password only login for a POP account, yet rejects

a user selected update to login using modern authentication OAuth2, even when all app

permissions are correct and this should work okay. But it doesn't work and neither are

error popups triggered, but what happens instead is a misleading "no new messages"

server response when in actuality there is a bin full of waiting messages it doesn't report.

The problem is only resolved by changing from the legacy server pop3.live.com to use a

different server that does accept the updated login using modern authentication OAuth2.

The server I discovered does work is a newer different mail server outlook.office365.com

which does respond normally and display waiting messages working as it should. From

this observation it appears the requirement is to use the updated login OAuth2 in

combination with the correct port for POP / 995 or for IMAP / 993 in combination

with the mail server address that will respond normally to that updated OAuth2 login.

All the app permissions also have to be checked in the settings of the Outlook account

and what is actually just a new name for your old hotmail account, with those settings

accessed in the webmail portal for your Outlook account. Linked below is a page

I'm wondering about the email Microsoft sent regarding the September 16th update deadline for Hotmail/Outlook accounts. An end-user brought this up today, and I'm not entirely clear on the impact.

Specifically, if they don't update their sign-in method by the deadline, will they:

• Lose access to their email completely?
• Be forced to migrate to a different email provider?
• What steps should they take to avoid any disruption to their email access?
