I received an email stating Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access. Is this legit or a scam?

I am in my 70's, and don't care about copilot writing my emails, or paying $20.00/mo to subscribe. I've had this account for 25 years, so don't want to lose my email. Will I have a problem logging in now? I have a 360 account. When you click on your link it shows copilot options, which I don't care about. I just don't want a hassle with my email. So what do I need to do, in simple terms, and why can't Microsoft just include an outlook update separate from the push for copilot? Thanks

Incoming mail server settings are first image, and then outgoing server SMTP

with my email user name erased for privacy from spammers and web crawlers

I've been using computers for fifty years. And have both POP and IMAP accounts numbering

more than a dozen that operate without issue on computers I built myself, just like the first

computer I ever owned. I also have copies of Linux that I can use if Microsoft becomes too ridiculous, but hope it doesn't get to that place. To me not all change is "progress" but I have no issue with valid technology that is practical and is a genuine improvement. Too much just isn't.

There isn't any conclusive verified good confirmed reason or basis to believe the disruption

of services as would occur by deprecating POP and IMAP is scheduled like some other

volunteers have said is going to happen. After Monday of the upcoming week everyone

will know what is reliable good information and what is only someones idea that may be

right or wrong. So let's get back to this next week after it becomes evident what has

occurred as a litmus test of whether the MS decision makers are wise or foolish.

Earlier in this thread I have been told that I am not exempted and will have to move to an Exchange Server. Benefit is that my Contacts will be synced across all my devices (something that I have not yet achieved!). Downside is that the Deleted folder does delete your emails quickly.

With my POP folders I can manually delete items in my Deleted Folder. This means that I can go over old emails if a question about them comes up. Also, when I purchase something I can move the pertinent folder to "Deleted" when the item is delivered, and then manually delete the email once it has been checked against my credit card statement.

I used IMAP for 6 months and had to create an Archive folder as a mid-way house before deletion inside the Deleted Folder. Will probably have to do the same thing come Monday 16th.

I take your point about passwords and security. My bank requires me to have a username, password, 4 digit code number, memorable phrase before I get online on my PC; it has now added 3rd party authorisation where it send me a further number by email or text, for me to type in! Trying to force me to use my mobile for everything, but I prefer my large PC display.

What your screenshot shows looks almost identical to the Windows Live Mail app and

is the Outlook desktop email client. Evidently it is not being regarded or treated the

same way as are other email clients considered to be "third party" or "unsupported",

and maybe are being exempted from the updated login requirement for being a

"trusted Microsoft app" unlike the legacy Windows Live Mail which doesn't offer

the updated login OAuth2 either. If you access your email account through a web

browser you can click the gear icon to access your settings and then on the Mail

tab you can access permissions that relate to POP being enabled and permissions

for other email clients to be enabled, along with enabling mail forwarding and

other permissions.
