Hi!
For a few weeks, I've been getting "enter password for hotmail" notification on my Mac. When I enter it, it says "Unable to verify account name or password". I've tried with POP, IMAP, Exchange... still have the same problem. I have another account on Mac Mail (not Outlook account) and works perfectly so I presume it's not coming from Mac but rather from Outlook.
Can someone help me please?

Yes, this thing is problematic even for people who know about computer. I'm happy you find your way out (even if it is not perfect). Don't forget to set the default email to Gmail for sending mails (see picture: "new messages will be sent from" in Mail -> Preferences -> Composing).

I did see a previous post saying they had done this and I have now done this also. Her "hot"mail appears to be forwarding to the gmail account on her MacBook. She is also running macOS Mojave 10.14.6.
I feel so bad for people who have little to no computer experience as it was not easy for me to figure out and I think I am fairly computer savvy. A waste of a good month continually trying to enter a password or reset all passwords until I finally opened her outlook account to search community questions. This isn't the easiest either, as asking the right question to get the right answer can be challenging!!
I'm sorry for your mother. Unprofessional from Microsoft... I had to create a new email myself (I chose Gmail). I'm on macOS Mojave 10.14.6 by the way. You can forward all the mails that are coming on Hotmail/Outlook to Gmail and from Gmail to Mac Mail. This way people who still send her emails on Hotmail/Outlook will still reach her and she will be able to send mails with Mac Mail (but it will be with her Gmail). It's far from ideal but if you're interested I can tell you how to do it. In Mac Mail itself, it will make little difference for your mom.
Ps: I took the example with Gmail but you can choose the email service you want.
"Unable to verify account name or password" on hotmail acct within the Mac Mail App. I've been trying to fix this same issue for my elderly Mother and so frustrating. I've read through the replies and sadly ditching the Microsoft Hotmail Account after wasting days trying different options to get her account to work again on her older MacBook Pro.
So disappointing Microsoft can't fix THEIR issues as this is their issue.
I've even tried creating a one time password with the two step authentication turned on and NO Luck.
Off to create a new email for an 88 year old!!!
