I was happily using older version of Outlook on windows but a popup made to switch to latest version (pre) of Outlook or mail not sure what its called now.
I am able to receive and send emails using outlook flawlessly however the issue is these emails are not getting marked as read, temporary its read but very soon again shows as unread. I checked on web Gmail as well it shows as unread. I dont think this could be sync issue because I receive emails on time.
What is going on any idea?

However, mark as read appropriately triggers the flag change server side when marking as read on selection change.
Unfortunately, it does not. The messages remain as unread on both GMail and IMAP servers.
I've checked again this morning -- If I select the email in the new outlook client and navigate to another message, with Settings -> Email -> Message handling -> Mark as read changed to "Mark displayed items as read when the selection changes", then the message is marked as read appropriately on the servers. Again, I've tested this with a Gmail server and a standard IMAP server.
I have Microsoft Outlook Version 1.2023.1018.300 (Production). And Client Version is 20231020006.20 .
You can check you version in Settings -> General -> About Outlook,
The only caveat is I did change other settings at the time (namely "Show email grouped by conversation" and "Sort Messages into Fcoused and Other" in Settings->Email->Layout (for all my email accounts). And in Email->Message handling, I have "Always keep items unread unless I explicitly mark them as read" selected too). So you may wish to change some of those settings as well if it isn't the setting I mentioned earlier.
I was on 1.2023.1011.100, but just updated it to 1.2023.1018.300 in case it was a fix in a newer release. Alas, it is still not working for either GMail or IMAP despite having the same settings as you described.
The "old" Outlook, prior to their "Exchange-like" syncing "feature", worked fine. Given its a preview product, I'm not going to waste time and effort beating it into submission - plenty of other email clients around.
It's amazing to me that this is still a bug. I've been dealing with this on "new" outlook for a long time now, and I would've thought for Microsoft's mainline email client this would be an urgent bug to fix.
I don't think they look at it as a bug. Somewhere buried in this thread, a moderator said something to the effect that it was an "offline" feature that hasn't been implemented yet. That made no sense since if you're offline, you can't receive any email no matter how hard you try. Mailbird has a little button that says "sync" and when you press it, an arrow spins and it says "syncing." They thought it was a good idea... not sure why MS doesn't. MS has been having email problems since the release of Windows 10 (2015), and I got tired of fighting them over "bugs" and dove headfirst into Mailbird. I couldn't be happier.
