I was happily using older version of Outlook on windows but a popup made to switch to latest version (pre) of Outlook or mail not sure what its called now.

I am able to receive and send emails using outlook flawlessly however the issue is these emails are not getting marked as read, temporary its read but very soon again shows as unread. I checked on web Gmail as well it shows as unread. I dont think this could be sync issue because I receive emails on time.

What is going on any idea?

    Hello,

I am Ibhadighi and I would happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

If emails in your Gmail account are not getting marked as read in Outlook (the latest version) and Gmail's web interface, it could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Gmail Account Settings: • Log in to your Gmail account using a web browser. • Go to "Settings" (click the gear icon in the top-right corner and select "See all settings"). • Click on the "General" tab. • Look for the "Conversation view" section. Ensure that "Conversation view" is turned on. This setting can sometimes affect how emails are marked as read. • Save your changes and check if the issue is resolved.
    2. Outlook Settings: • Open Outlook (the latest version). • Click on the "File" tab. • In the left sidebar, click on "Options." • In the Outlook Options window, go to the "Mail" category. • Under the "Reading Pane" section, check if "Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane" is selected. If not, select it. • Click the "OK" button to save your changes. • Restart Outlook and see if the issue persists.
    3. Email Rules and Filters: Check if you have any email rules or filters set up in Gmail that could be affecting how emails are marked as read. These rules can sometimes automatically mark emails as unread or perform other actions.
    4. Sync Issues: Even if you receive emails on time, there could still be a sync issue between Outlook and Gmail. Try the following steps: • Close Outlook. • Reopen Outlook and give it some time to sync all your emails. • Manually click on each email to mark them as read. Check if they stay marked as read after some time.
    5. Gmail Labs: Gmail has experimental features called "Labs." Sometimes, a Lab feature can affect email behavior. To check if any Labs features are causing the issue: • In Gmail, go to "Settings" > "See all settings." • Click on the "Labs" tab. • Disable all Labs features (click "Disable" next to each). • Save your changes and check if the issue is resolved. •
    6. Gmail App Permissions: Ensure that the Outlook app has the necessary permissions to access and modify your Gmail account. Sometimes, permission issues can affect how emails are marked.
    7. Cache issue: Sometimes, clearing the cache can resolve unexpected behavior in Outlook. Try deleting the cache files for your email account in Outlook by following these steps:
    8. Open Outlook and go to "File" > "Options" > "Advanced."
    9. Under "Performance," click on "Empty Cache."
    10. Select "OK" to confirm.

8.Corrupted profile: A corrupted Outlook profile can cause various issues, including problems with marking emails as read. Create a new profile in Outlook and test whether the issue persists. If it doesn't, then you may need to migrate your data to the new profile.

9.Outlook version issue: Although you mentioned that you updated to the latest version of Outlook, it's possible that there's a bug in the current version that's causing this behavior. Check for updates and install the latest patches.

If none of these solutions work, consider creating a new Outlook profile and importing your data to start fresh.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards, Ibhadighi.

Hey, thank you for your response but unfortunately these options did not work for me.

Do you know how to switch back to original Mail or Outlook?

You should have switch to turn Outlook Pre off. https://support.microsoft.com/office/toggling-out-of-the-new-outlook-for-windows-preview-ec102b39-5727-418e-ae1f-a1805434640c

Or, press Windows key + R to open the Run command and paste the path, including the parenthesis in the run box then press Enter. After it opens pin it to the taskbar. You can pin Outlook Pre to the task bar and use both.

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\OUTLOOK.EXE"

if you use 32-bit Office, it is here -

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\OUTLOOK.EXE"

Exactly what are you an advisor of, and have you actually used the "pre" outlook? This has been an issue since the release of the new outlook preview. It has NOTHING to do with email settings on the server side, as you gloriously posted as a solution above. This is 100% Microsoft's issue with their new software, and with everything else related to mail and MS, it looks as it's going to be released without a solution. As the OP says, when an email is viewed on outlook(pre) the read status is not updated on the server. So, if I sync my emails on my phone after that, it still shows up as unread. This happens on Yahoo and Gmail, but interestingly enough does NOT happen with MS's own email server (365). Once I view the email on my phone (Android, I can't speak for apple), it gets marked as read on the server, and all is good. Once again, Google gets it right. I have left feedback on this issue numerous times, so they are most certainly aware. The last email client that actually worked was Window Live Mail, and MS killed it off, presumably to force people to Outlook which of course wasn't free. Neither was Windows back then. If it aint broke, don't fix it, but MS continually tried to fix things that aren't broken. I used to love Internet Explorer, until MS pulled out all the stops trying to compete with Chrome, and in an effort to compete wound up with a browser that imports ALL the setting from Chrome. That's not fixing your browser, that's cloning someone else's. In my book, there are three things that MS got right... Windows, the Office Suite, and the Surface hardware. But email... why is that so difficult for them? Loads of 3rd party developers do it just fine.

Official release is approx 12 months... they have time to fix it. Whether it will be fixed ...

I suspect the issue is related to using the Microsoft cloud for Gmail (Yahoo and iCloud) accounts. If so, removing the account - and choosing the option to remove from everywhere - then add it back should help, at least for a bit.
