Email on Gmail account are not getting marked as read

That was actually the very first feedback I sent to MS about the "new" Outlook. Unfortunately, I'm now relegated to using the webmail versions of Yahoo and Gmail, since the new outlook is unusable in it's current form. Hmmm, I did that with maps (bing--->google maps) and my internet browser (IE/edge--->chrome), and never went back. I'm seeing a pattern emerge here. C'mon, MS can't you at least get mail right?

This is quite annoying, and isn't limited to GMail. It is also IMAP - any email marked as read in the new Outlook is not marked as read on the mail server (and thus shows as unread in other email clients).

In the old Outlook there was an option to mark emails as read on the server, but that's not available in the new Outlook.

Official release is approx 12 months... they have time to fix it. Whether it will be fixed ...

I suspect the issue is related to using the Microsoft cloud for Gmail (Yahoo and iCloud) accounts. If so, removing the account - and choosing the option to remove from everywhere - then add it back should help, at least for a bit.

Exactly what are you an advisor of, and have you actually used the "pre" outlook? This has been an issue since the release of the new outlook preview. It has NOTHING to do with email settings on the server side, as you gloriously posted as a solution above. This is 100% Microsoft's issue with their new software, and with everything else related to mail and MS, it looks as it's going to be released without a solution. As the OP says, when an email is viewed on outlook(pre) the read status is not updated on the server. So, if I sync my emails on my phone after that, it still shows up as unread. This happens on Yahoo and Gmail, but interestingly enough does NOT happen with MS's own email server (365). Once I view the email on my phone (Android, I can't speak for apple), it gets marked as read on the server, and all is good. Once again, Google gets it right. I have left feedback on this issue numerous times, so they are most certainly aware. The last email client that actually worked was Window Live Mail, and MS killed it off, presumably to force people to Outlook which of course wasn't free. Neither was Windows back then. If it aint broke, don't fix it, but MS continually tried to fix things that aren't broken. I used to love Internet Explorer, until MS pulled out all the stops trying to compete with Chrome, and in an effort to compete wound up with a browser that imports ALL the setting from Chrome. That's not fixing your browser, that's cloning someone else's. In my book, there are three things that MS got right... Windows, the Office Suite, and the Surface hardware. But email... why is that so difficult for them? Loads of 3rd party developers do it just fine.

Or, press Windows key + R to open the Run command and paste the path, including the parenthesis in the run box then press Enter. After it opens pin it to the taskbar. You can pin Outlook Pre to the task bar and use both.
