The new Outlook app doesn't open .eml files

Hello, recently the new Outlook app replaced the Mail and Calendar apps. It's nice, but I noticed that when I double click on a .eml file (that was usually opened with the Mail app) this happens:

  1. The Mail app launches, and instantly closes itself to redirect me to Outlook
  2. The Outlook app then launches, but does not open my .eml file. Instead, it lands on its "home page" like when I open the app with its launcher.

I currently cannot open .eml files. If I try to change the default app to open this format, Outlook doesn't appear on the app list so I cannot chose it. I don't know where its launcher is on disk either, so I cannot select it manually.

What should i do to fix this issue?

If I try to change the default app to open this format, Outlook doesn't appear on the app list so I cannot chose it.

It has been a while since this issue was reported and now changing the default app for viewing .eml files to Outlook (new) from the context menu is available. Please change your default app to Outlook new and then try double-clicking on your .eml files.

    sorry but this doesn't help at all, you're just repeating what the faled attempt of opening the file is already telling ths user to do - revert to older version of Outlook. However, as per Charlie Bender's comment there's a workaround which you showed zero effort in trying to come up with!

    I found a work-around. If you attach the .eml file to a new email, you can open it there with New Outlook.

    Brilliant, thanks a lot - this saved my day.

    How ridiculous it is from Microsoft, to introduce a new business product that has one of key featured dysfunctional and user paying hefty license fees are left to experiment in desperate search for a workaround! Esp. as the capability to interpret the file is there, "ONLY" the "open-file" feature has been ridiculed? How hard some dev guy in MS had to try to introduce such an obscure bug!

    If I use Mail as the "Open with", it will start to open the file with the Mail app, but as the switch is set to "new Outlook", it then switches into the new interface wich closes the file.

    I tried setting the "Open with" to use the "new Outlook" located here;

    C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.OutlookForWindows_1.2023.1018.300_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\olk.exe

    Windows added the "new Outlook" option to my "Open with" menu, but when it opens I get the following Popup;

    When I switch to the Classic Outlook for Windows, I am able to view the .EML files, my only fear is that when the Classic Outlook for Windows is depreciated and we are forced to use the New Outlook for Windows, we will lose this functionality. Emails are saved to our CRM, and if we need to view them they have to be downloaded to the users PC, so emailing them to yourself so you can read them several times a day as a workaround is an extra step and a very inefficient use of people's time.

    I do hope the development team is aware, and will remedy the situation prior to the depreciation of the Classic Outlook for Windows.
