Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
I gave up and switched to Mozilla Thunderbird. It works better for me and omits the ads.

Hi, I'm running the new version of Outlook on Windows 11, and have connected to both my Uni (O365) and Gmail (Microsoft Cloud). O365 works fine, but the Gmail account doesn't sync read status back to gmail. I.e. outlook gets the correct read status from Gmail, and it syncs things like starring/flagging emails back to Gmail. But although I can mark things as read in Outlook, that status never syncs back to Gmail. The same is true on 3 different PCs, so it's not peculiar to one particular computer.
Any ideas?

Same issue here as well with both Gmail and Yahoo accounts... works fine with outlook account
I hope this issue is resolved prior to forcing users to use the new version in 2024.
I'm seeing the same behavior, but using Outlook on OS X as opposed to windows. The problem appeared with the most recent update -- 16.78.3 (23102801).
Same issues here. I tried the MS classic Mail, Outlook, and the new Outlook. Only the new Outlook has this problem. Take Gmail as an example. With the new Outlook, the Gmail webmail still shows unread when I read mail messages on the new Outlook.
