New Outlook Not Syncing Read Status for Gmail

Hi, I'm running the new version of Outlook on Windows 11, and have connected to both my Uni (O365) and Gmail (Microsoft Cloud). O365 works fine, but the Gmail account doesn't sync read status back to gmail. I.e. outlook gets the correct read status from Gmail, and it syncs things like starring/flagging emails back to Gmail. But although I can mark things as read in Outlook, that status never syncs back to Gmail. The same is true on 3 different PCs, so it's not peculiar to one particular computer.

Any ideas?

    For what it's worth, this doesn't work for me (classic outlook on Mac, see above in thread for version numbers)

    The longer this bug persists, the more I'm getting used to, and liking, Thunderbird (on Windows).

    When I tried to sign up for Thunderbird, the default settings didn't work. I am wondering if there is something about Google Workspace for Education accounts which it didn't like. Did you need to make any adjustments in order to get it working as expected?

    I first set up Thunderbird a couple of years ago, so I'm not sure. As I recall, I had to check with my university to see what server settings to use. I think I had to change the authentication method to OAuth2. And I seem to recall that the Thunderbird set up wanted to use the university's domain name as the server name, and I had to change it so that the incoming server is imap.gmail.com and outgoing is smtp.gmail.com with my email address used as my user name.

    Thunderbird isn't as automatic as Mail/Outlook, but I find it much easier to fix things like this.
