Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
I am also having the same issue. Read/unread status in New Outlook does not sync back to Gmail.

Hi, I'm running the new version of Outlook on Windows 11, and have connected to both my Uni (O365) and Gmail (Microsoft Cloud). O365 works fine, but the Gmail account doesn't sync read status back to gmail. I.e. outlook gets the correct read status from Gmail, and it syncs things like starring/flagging emails back to Gmail. But although I can mark things as read in Outlook, that status never syncs back to Gmail. The same is true on 3 different PCs, so it's not peculiar to one particular computer.
Any ideas?

I can confirm I am having the same issue as well. I have removed the Gmail account and readded it. but the problem still persists.
I am having the same issue. Very annoying. I am using the right-click method on two or more emails.
Hi, sure
These are my settings in mail.google.com that I think are relevant:
Accounts and Import:
Grant access to your account:
Mark as readx Mark conversation as read when opened by others
Leave conversation unread when opened by others
Sender information
x Show this address and the person who sent it ("sent by …")
Show this address only (*** Email address is removed for privacy ***)
Forwarding and POP/IMAP
POP download:
- Status: POP is disabled
IMAP access:
Status: IMAP is enabled
When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:
Auto-Expunge on - Immediately update the server. (default)
x Auto-Expunge off - Wait for the client to update the server.
When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:
x Archive the message (default)
Move the message to the Trash
Immediately delete the message forever
Folder size limits
x Do not limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder (default)
Limit IMAP folders to contain no more than this many messages 1,000
Add-ons:
There are no add-ons installed.
In Outlook for windows I have these settings (among others):
Mail > Message Handling
Mark read: Mark displayed items as read when the selection changes
In the unread filter: Always keep items unread unless I explicitly mark them as read
I have the same settings but the problem persists. The read/unread status with Gmail is not synced when using New Outlook, unless I select 2 or more emails and mark them as read/unread using the option from the right-click drop-down menu.
thanks for your elaborate reply Enrique,
but it didn't resolve for me.
