I'm not able to add my work 365 basic account in this new Outlook anymore. I get this error: "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your work or school. Try to login with another account or go to Outlook on the web."

This is ridiculous that I'm able to add my personal Gmail, my personal Outlook email, but can't add my work account which my company pays money for. Now you want to charge us more by upgrading from basic to standard to able to use your new Outlook I see. I also noticed ads right in my Inbox in this new Outlook. Seriously? Ads too now? Well, it seems like you're very desperate lately dear Microsoft and using such enforcing brute tactics on us - users won't do good for you. It will have opposite effect in fact: Now I will tell my IT boss to switch to Google instead. And guess what? I won't be the only one doing this. You know what's your problem, Microsoft? You never listen and you never care about us. You just do what you want to do and it's all about squizzing money out of us while giving us worst products compared to other companies.

P.S. By the way, your new Outlook sucks and everything you give us lately sucks too.

    Just as FYI ... I was having the license issues with my Basic EOL email address. I finally got everything to work by going into settings and making my free outlook (MSA) account (the same account I use to login in here, xbox, etc, etc - all the MS services - but more importantly - it is also my family 0365 account) as the default ("Set as Primary Account").

    After doing that - I was able to add all my email accounts - Basic Exchange Online accounts, and other Work (E5 Licensed) accounts.

    If and when, the New Outlook will allow my basic Exchange account to be the default for email and events - things will be perfect; right now, I have to change it from my MSA to my E1 account.

    Edit - I went to a different computer - and added my E1 account and had no issues; then went back to my primary computer - and removed my MSA account .. and everything is working (for now).

    There is a lot of false information being reported from Microsoft employees about the "New Outlook" and correct licensing. The official Microsoft whitepaper for enabling and disabling the new outlook for users states "The new Outlook for Windows is enabled by default for all users with a Microsoft Entra account and Exchange Online account." Enable or disable access to the new Outlook for Windows | Microsoft Learn

    This indicates that any account with an exchange online license will work with the new outlook. So, Microsoft needs to stop trying to hose people out of more licensing and make their product work like it should.

    I have a licensed version of the Outlook desktop app supported by an E3 license, and another Outlook account under an E1 license. This is what worked:

    1. Switched to new Outlook. Received an error accessing the E1 account.
    2. Removed the E1 account.
    3. Fiddled with adding this through IMAP. This is either not implemented or nerfed.
    4. Switched back to old Outlook. E1 account reappeared/was retained.
    5. Switched back to new Outlook. Everything works.

    In my case, "turning it off and turning it back on again" worked. SMH. Not sure if this will stick or even work for everyone. And I suppose the fact that the software configuration does not, but better or worse, behave consistently is a HUGE red flag.

    I just tested this to see if was working yet and it did. I installed New Outlook on a clean machine, Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Apps. I then made the first account an Outlook.com account not tied to any license. I then tried to add an M365 Kiosk account and it failed with the error:

    "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your work or school. Try to login with another account or go to Outlook on the web."

    I then added my Outlook.com account that I have M365 Family Subscription, and then made it the primary account in the profile. After I did that, I was then able to add the Kiosk account in the profile. Since the change was just rolling out you might not have had it yet. Please give it a try again once you get a chance.
