Hotmail keeps asking for my password.

I have also had this problem, I think it is something to do with modern autentication, I have wasted so much time on this that my next move will be to use Thunderbird, which works fine on another old PC.

I hope MS will accept ownership and fully address this problem, but rather think they just want us to go the 365 route or spend lots of money (I don't have) upgrading everything.

None of the solutions suggested in this thread work for me at all. I'm using a Hotmail account in Office 2021 in Windows 10.

The registry settings suggested by Asbjørn- do nothing. I assume they only work for Office 2013.

It is not possible to add my Hotmail accounts as any other type than IMAP. When I click any of the other buttons when adding an account it just comes up with an error. I can't remember the error code now, but it isn't an error code that is mentioned anywhere on the internet that I can find.

The only way it will accept an account is by selecting IMAP. And then it asks repeatedly for my password. The weird thing is, sometimes it works and syncs my emails, but that is a very small minority of the time.

Edit: it does work as POP but that's useless because my subfolders are all missing.

Microsoft sent this out in an email:

"The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th"

So, the proper answer is that Microsoft is irritating you intentionally to make you go ahead and switch your email account from POP3 or IMAP to a Microsoft Exchange account before September 16, 2024. Delete your existing account in Outlook 365 and then add it back allowing Outlook to do it automatically. It will set up an exchange server type account.

I did this and have had no more issues. A couple of things I had to do were switch my calendar back to my preferred email account which wasn't the hotmail account and create a rule in the new exchange account that instructs it to deliver incoming messages to my preferred email account inbox. I like to have messages delivered from my total of six email accounts to one inbox.
