I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(
See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)
I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...
They both have this error.
I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(
Please help me.
Thanks in advance
Pierre

Mailbird may have been mentioned in another post as well, and it seems that any client, Microsoft or to your point third party, may be affected. Not much else we can do... except maybe report it at down detector under Microsoft 365 > Outlook.
Just adding my own experience. Thunderbird started acting up early in the week. Thought it might be related to MS and OAuth2.0 authentication, and it still might, but difficult to tell. Also using 9Folders email for Android, and experiencing periodic connection issues, more disconnection issues in actuality. Thinking 9Folders might be at fault, I reached out to them, and they responded quickly, providing information regarding MS being the cause here, stating MS is aware, and that they have their Outlook team on it.
Let's hope it's back by the beginning of the work week, otherwise, we'll really feel the pain.
It seems much more than IMAP. Numerous server options rejecting.
Yes, switching Thunderbird to OAuth worked for me also. Nothing working on 9Folders for Android though.
