I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

I had the problem with two different outlook accounts, one had the 2-steps authentication one had not.

My client on both a desktop and a laptop was office outlook 2013.

Over the last few days, I was able to go by using an app password for the 2-steps account. Sometimes entering it once would suffice, sometimes it would keep asking but closing the error message would work.

For the regular account, entering the password once every time I would open office outlook would usually work.

Now today after MSFT supposedly fixed the issue, I ran into a new issue on the account that had the 2-steps authentication. I could get my emails to updates using my usual method, but when I would try to reply to an email, outlook would close abruptly.

I don't know if this was the result of the problem and fix or a coincidence, but I had to do an online repair (reinstall) of outlook in order to fix the issue.

I also has to check the remember password box the first time I got the prompt.

Since then, so far, it appears to be working.

Does someone definitively know that the problem is fixed? With these trailing reports, is it still an active problem?

The Microsoft Support status for this issue at

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/outlook-and-other-apps-are-unable-to-connect-to-outlook-com-f4202ebf-89c6-4a8a-bec3-3d60cf7deaef

has been updated from "Investigating" to "Resolved". I hope it was not premature, but at this time we have not had further authentication/login prompt errors using Windows Live Mail, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016, Thunderbird, and the Samsung Email apps since early this morning when changes were evidently made by the Outlook team.
