I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

    Hi Angus -

Kudos to 9Folders for jumping on his quickly and creating a workable solution while the rest of us wait for MS to get their heads out of the sand and fix it properly.

With that being said, 9Folders is not an option for those of us dealing with this issue in Mailbird, Thunderbird, or a myriad of other Windows desktop apps.

My Outlook mail is currently working just swimmingly on my native iPhone Apple Mail app, as well as on my iPad and my work-provided MacBook Pro (also the native mail app), but my personal Windows laptop is having these connectivity issues in both Mailbird as well as the MS Outlook app.

Right now the only way I can stay up to date on my multiple Outlook email accounts is via a web browser, which is awkward and time-consuming.

There's no doubt at this point that this is an issue wit Microsoft back-end services, and Microsoft has acknowledged it in a one paragraph article that has a link back to this thread but irresponsibly does not inform people that the thread is now about the server-side issue. 9folders is tricky because the fact that they have a workaround does inform the topic but to your point that discussion, except to say "9folder users can try that setting" does not pull in the direction of pressuring Microsoft to address the underlying issue. Also FYI it's not just third-party apps. I have two properly licensed and paid for Windows 10 workstations with paid freestanding versions of Microsoft office 2021 Pro outlook and even there the issue cannot be avoided. I also suggest that people report it at down detect or under Microsoft 365-Outlook. https://downdetector.com/status/microsoft-365/

I have the same problem. I'm using Outlook 2019. It seems that a regular basic or app password is accepted only once, and then it's blocked.

I use Fetchmail to collect mail from Outlook.com, and my IMAP logins with an app password fail 50% of the time. There is no facility in Fetchmail to use "modern authentication" (OAuth2).

This setup worked flawlessly until 6 days ago so I agree with everyone saying this is a Microsoft issue which Microsoft must fix.

Is there any thread moderation here?

It would help immensely if the thread title was changed to reflect the fact that Microsoft knows about this issue and the fact that that announcement links back to this thread.

Anything on the part of helpers and moderators of this thread or from Microsoft to channel the flow of information? Even with low expectations for disclosure and communication, Microsoft failure to communicate about and contain this is jarringly irresponsible.
