Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password

If you would like to continue to stay with the same Outlook experience you have been using, you can upgrade to Office 2021 which does support Modern auth against Outlook.com sync. If you don't want to upgrade and just want a free offering, we do have the New Outlook which supports multi account, a free version of Mac Outlook, as well as Outlook for both iOS and Android.

As you mention there are other solutions like Thunderbird that do also support OAuth and can sync your outlook.com mailbox.

You can also continue to use your current setup until Basic Auth is fully deprecated, which we will ensure we give well and ample notice before that happens. However, if you are using that you might see increased authentication prompts as we mentioned due to the increased security settings that we have had to deploy to ensure we are protecting accounts from potential attack.

thanks for your response. What I do not get is the following:

BlackBerry Hub+ does support 2FA, but only for business accounts (it links to Azure Auth services).

My question is: Does Microsoft support modern Auth via EAS for outlook.com? So would it be possible for vendors such as BlackBerry to update the app to support modern Auth via EAS? This is not clearly stated here.

I also contacted BlackBerry to ask for modern Auth support for personal outlook.com accounts, but I am sure it would be also a good idea that you also contact them as you offered.

Hi David - I’m not as versed as others in this conversation so I’m hoping you can explain how a current paid M365 user, who’s been getting the password error messages in iOS installations, can fix the issue. In an iOS install email process, I have both a Microsoft Exchange option (which I’ve used for years) and an Outlook.com option which I’ve recently used to try to fix the password issue, and has been more stable. Is one better than the other in terms of security and/or password stability? Which option should I be using? Thanks.

I keep reading in these posts about OAuth and I haven't the foggiest idea what that is.

Well, I came to conclusion what to do here (with outlook 2016) or an old mail programs/applications.

1. change to 2 steps authentication (verification) - outlook.com security options.
2. create an app password - outlook.com security options - copy your app password, and remember it.
3. at account setting delete old your ****@outlook.com account settings (outlook 2016)
4. at account setting add new account as ******@outlook.com. The password should be the password from app password.

Anyways, only way to work with old outlook apps (2010/2013/2016) for windows is using app passwords instead of regular passwords (2 steps verification).

I wonder how long this method of app passwords will work with gmail.com and/or outlook.com.

When this option of app passwords will stop working, we will have to change to an updated outlook program (2021), or work on outlook on the web. The problem with this, is that we will have also to update operating systems, because not everything is working with old OS such as windows 7 or windows XP.

Software companies, are forcing the users to advance, with upgrading OS and programs, otherwise, they will not be able to show profits.
