I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm using (and have used) Thunderbird 102, with TBSync for calendar and address book syncing.

As I wrote, service was intermittent for most of the month, but out completely the past two days. Why isn't MS rolling back all changes to late January when its actions caused this situation? I hope you'll agree that consumers shouldn't have to patch our way through a software we pay for.

P.S. I pay for a Microsoft365 personal account and shoudn't get "User Not Found HTTP error 404" when attempting an Office 365 connection. But I do.

The main issue is with basic authentication. In order to mitigate my recommendation is to make OAuth work. I'm no expert on Thunderbird but I know it has support for OAuth. I found this article, Microsoft OAuth Authentication and Thunderbird in 2024 | Thunderbird Help (mozilla.org). Please try this configuration.

My Oauth mail account is functioning, but my calendar and contacts are not. And none of the suggestions you've provided are resolving the issue. My issues with TBSync were intermittent until this past Wednesday. Now they're constant, suggestion MS is making the problem worse, not better.

I really appreciate your time in answering my posts, but I again have to ask why MS hasn't just rolled back its untested changes that have caused this situation, and instead are leaving its users to flounder with a non-functioning service? It's unnecessarily frustrating for everyone involved.

It looks like MS is still trying to apply small bandages here and there for what appears to be more of a systemic problem.

You are right, the issue impacts the latest M365 version of Outlook. I added my personal Hotmail to my work Outlook, which is M365 with latest updates from the stable channel and it has this exact issue...over and over and over again. It was so bad, I removed my account from my work Outlook after a few hours. The password prompt has some type of "always on top" attribute and draws over all other screen elements. It also takes away cursor/pointer focus, so it's incredibly disruptive to normal workflow, so I had to remove it.
