I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

    The main issue is with basic authentication. In order to mitigate my recommendation is to make OAuth work. I'm no expert on Thunderbird but I know it has support for OAuth. I found this article, Microsoft OAuth Authentication and Thunderbird in 2024 | Thunderbird Help (mozilla.org). Please try this configuration.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I'm using (and have used) Thunderbird 102, with TBSync for calendar and address book syncing.

    As I wrote, service was intermittent for most of the month, but out completely the past two days. Why isn't MS rolling back all changes to late January when its actions caused this situation? I hope you'll agree that consumers shouldn't have to patch our way through a software we pay for.

    P.S. I pay for a Microsoft365 personal account and shoudn't get "User Not Found HTTP error 404" when attempting an Office 365 connection. But I do.

    @Robdstef,

    What is your email client? I don't recognize those account configuration screens. I see ActiveSync in the screens. Open Outlook or Word and click File, Office Account, what Version and Channel are you on?

    If you are on M365 then you might be affected by this issue, Outlook Desktop Exchange ActiveSync connections stopped working in Version 2401 - Microsoft Support. If you are on Current Channel then its most certainly this. If this is the issue then follow the Workaround section in that article to revert to a working build.

    Gabriel...I'm trying to remain patient and understanding but there are limits. After intermittent working connectivity earlier this week, I now have no connectivity. I've tried actual passwords, app passwords, Exchange setups, Office365 setups. Nothing works.

    Today, I again tried what temporarily worked in the past: removing and re-adding the account. Now, I cannot reconnect and now I have no calendar or contacts access.

    How much longer must we endure this? PLEASE...HELP!

    It looks like an issue affecting individuals' status within the MS database rather than a clash between MS and client sofware, as my 9Folders has had no issues since the remove/add manoeuvre.
