Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password

BlackBerry Hub+ does support 2FA, but only for business accounts (it links to Azure Auth services).

My question is: Does Microsoft support modern Auth via EAS for outlook.com? So would it be possible for vendors such as BlackBerry to update the app to support modern Auth via EAS? This is not clearly stated here.

I also contacted BlackBerry to ask for modern Auth support for personal outlook.com accounts, but I am sure it would be also a good idea that you also contact them as you offered.

Hi Tony_MC - You are not being kicked or forced to get a Microsoft 365 Subscription. If you would like to continue to stay with the same Outlook experience you have been using, you can upgrade to Office 2021 which does support Modern auth against Outlook.com sync. If you don't want to upgrade and just want a free offering, we do have the New Outlook which supports multi account, a free version of Mac Outlook, as well as Outlook for both iOS and Android.

As you mention there are other solutions like Thunderbird that do also support OAuth and can sync your outlook.com mailbox.

You can also continue to use your current setup until Basic Auth is fully deprecated, which we will ensure we give well and ample notice before that happens. However, if you are using that you might see increased authentication prompts as we mentioned due to the increased security settings that we have had to deploy to ensure we are protecting accounts from potential attack.

JaviHotmail - At this time we haven't fully announced the date that Basic Auth will be going away. We wanted to give an update to potentially allow users to have guidance on what they can do to quickly get themself back into a better state. The large majority of users that are leveraging pop/imap/eas are actually using clients that support OAuth. So they can make the configuration change and see less auth prompts.

Those that are on older version of Outlook, such as Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016 (which have ended mainstream support) will be the ones that need to move towards a newer version that does support OAuth. Again we know this is often something users need to plan for so we wanted to get that guidance out in advance.

As we look to announce full deprecation timelines, we will ensure that it is timely enough that users just don't get blocked and there is ample opportunity to get upgraded.

Hi there - Yes, this is not something that is unique to Microsoft or any one email provider. This is common and many across the industry are moving this direction. I can't speak to what every provider is doing, but most will be removing the support for app passwords as well because it would leave the same security level of basic auth. It still is prime for abuse and attacks.

While the New Outlook is one option, you have others options as well. Sticking within the Outlook family you can upgrade to Outlook 2021 which does indeed support OAuth when syncing Outlook.com, get a Microsoft 365 Subscription that has the latest version of Outlook. Or you can use the web experience at outlook.com.

If those aren't viable options for you other third party mail solutions do indeed support OAuth against Outlook.com

Hi there - Sure, let me try to explain a bit. As mentioned briefly in the known issue article, there is increased levels of bad actors that attempt to do brute force password attacks which targets different accounts that generate high volumes of authentication requests while they try to find a password that works to gain entry. The Outlook.com Service has throttling in place to handle these spikes, which has the side effect of increased authentication prompts.

We will continue to adjust the throttling policies where possible trying to always balance the impact to customers while trying to ensure we are protecting our customers' accounts.

This is why we recommend moving over to OAuth when possible, to help ease and quickly improve your experience you are having.
