I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

Customers of these email clients really should be asking their email client developers why they do not support OAuth2 on Outlook.com accounts. App passwords are a workaround for older email clients which never added OAuth2 support.

Mailbird only supports OAuth 2.0 for exchange accounts, but not for personal outlook accounts.

Thank you for your attention to this issue, and in particular for the follow-up to keep people posted, rays of light amidst a storm of obfuscation.

FWIW, in MS Office 2021 Pro Outlook on Windows 10 Pro and Fair Email on android, which both experienced rapidly but variably repeated password requests for each of multiple accounts in the profiles since the start of this issue, are now both performing as expected.

    Thanks again.

    Hi all,

The Outlook.com service teams implemented changes in the service last night to help resolve the issue. Please test and check if you are connecting reliably again.

If you are using Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2016, please connect with an App Password. I am going to double check with the Outlook Team if those versions should support modern auth and will share back what I find out. From my current testing I am not seeing that work so it might just be in M365 Outlook.

If you are still not able to connect, please share what the app is and what connection settings you are using such as POP, IMAP, Exchange. Please make sure to test with an app password and not your regular password.

I use Mailbird too and have the same problem. One workaround I found is:

    1. I can send mail and SMTP settings always work
    2. IMAP settings report a problem, but
    3. Open settings and check the SMTP configuration
    4. Close both SMTP and IMAP settings windows
    5. Now, I can check my mail and despite the error warning, I can receive mail

    Hoping for a resolution soon.
