I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

    I have the same issues, since 22 Jan 2024. I have been chatting with 2 outlook/hotmail mail helpdesk people before I found this thread. They were clearly not aware of this thread and effectively told me 'go to blackberry'.

    My work around solution, not ideal as it does not sync folders nor allows you to transfer mails to folders through the hub, is to do the following (translating this from Dutch, so may not all be correct):

    • manually add the email address to the hub (so not the automatic option)
    • chose POP3
    • settings ingoing server:

    * server: outlook.office365.com

    * port: 995

    * safety type: SSL/TLS

    • settings outgoing server:

    * server: smtp.outlook.office365.com

    * port: 587

    * safety type: STARTTLS

    In case you also want some positive feedback, my IMAP logins to outlook.office365.com with an app password (TLS, port 993) have been working fine since the fix was announced.

    Seems to have gotten worse again tonight, was down for a few hours. I was on cellular data (IPv6) during most of that time. In fact over the last few days it seems to happen more frequently when my phone switches to cellular and back to wifi, maybe the IPv6 infrastructure hasn't gotten all the patches/fixes yet.

    Outlook 2021 supports modern authentication (no app password), you should be using that. My Outlook has been working fine all along using that.
