I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

Issue it still ongoing. I had it almost go away but...

There was about half a day where, for all of my devices, it was not occurring nearly as much or at all but the issue was still there and got worse and more prevalent again.

Outlook does receive e-mails but still asked for passwords.

Indeed, that occurred on my devices in some tests as well. Navigating folders, the action of which AFAIK sends it's own authentication request, may behave differently that a manual send receive.

attempt to login about 6 times before it works.

Yes, yes, that. (a symptom that many people may have not noticed before attempting password change)

Repeatedly and rapidly sending the existing credentials will get a connection and if the send-receives are continuous (achieved differently in different clients) the connection may persist. More detail in a moment but first a general note:

Since at least the morning of January 24 there has been a substantial back-end issue with Microsoft email (and perhaps other) services, which MS has finally acknowledged here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/outlook-and-other-apps-are-unable-to-connect-to-outlook-com-f4202ebf-89c6-4a8a-bec3-3d60cf7deaef) Note: There is a link at that post referring back to this thread.

Unfortunately this type of back-end issue presents symptoms that resemble bad password for server configuration and many people have embarked on that course of troubleshooting needlessly, probably compounding their issues by changing settings while there is a back-end issue. The issue persists as of this moment, midday (GMT-5), Sunday Jan 28, 2024. Tech details incoming.

I already did that. Also deleted the whole Outlook profile and created a new one. Still nothing. I tried both with the main Outlook password and the app password. Nothing works. Or, to put it better, it does work after a number of tries (i.e. the username/pass is correct), and randomly fails afterwards.

. I was also experiencing the problem with Thunderbird and enabling Oath2 authorization fixed it ! There's no such option in Outlook for windows.

Outlook for Windows does support OAuth2. Remove and re-add the account but make sure you enter your main outlook.com password, not your app password.
