I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

    Stephen,

Just to double check, if you add your Outlook.com account with the iOS Mail App as Outlook.com are you still seeing the auth prompts? Has it gotten any better since the changes this weekend?

I suspect there are both Outlook.com and Exchange options because Outlook.com has some back-end differences to Exchange 2019 and M365. There are a couple others that posted in the thread that have iOS Mail App that I contacted and sharing info to the service team to investigate further. If you are still seeing auth prompts I might reach out through forum moderation if the service team needs more accounts to investigate with.

    Ron,

I also thought Outlook 2016 supported modern auth but unfortunately that is only for M365. The Outlook Team had to go look at the code and confirm they only did the 2FA with App Password support for Outlook.com.

One way to confirm is to look at the Connection Status Dialog, Description of the Connection Status dialog (press Ctrl, then right click the Outlook icon in the system tray, click Connection Status). Even with the reg keys to enable ADAL and MSOAuth Outlook still connects with Authn=Clear for Basic. It should be Bearer or MSA for modern auth.

    Gabriel:

I appreciate the quick follow-up. To clarify, my iPhone is using the iOS Microsoft Exchange Outlook via my Microsoft 365 account. It just generated the "Password incorrect" message again. Per another user's suggestion on an Apple Discussion Board, using the Outlook.com sign-in option with my Microsoft 365 credentials, instead of Microsoft Exchange, seems more stable. I don't know if your input regarding Outlook 2013, 2016, or New Outlook is relevant to many of these Exchange-related issues.

    >> Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016 only offer basic auth.

I thought Outlook 2016 supports modern auth and enabled by default.
