BlackBerry android devices or any Google device can't connect to outlook server

More and more I'm starting to feel bullied into downloading Outlook... Last week I put a wrong password in outlook.live and it asked me to reset my password after "too many wrong attempts". Fair enough, it was an old password, I haven't changed it in years because my MS account was only used via BBHub and XBox. Today it asked me again to reset my password after one wrong attempt and didn't allow me to go back to the old one. After reseting it I was greeted with a pop-up telling me to "get rid of passwords" by installing Outlook for android...

I fumbled around in the security options of my MS account and found no option for a two factor authentication with a simple SMS code, just install MS Authenticator or suck it up, so if anyone knows if it is possible to add 2FA via an SMS instead of an app it would be much appreciated.

I honestly feel this will backfire on Microsoft, big time. Bullying people into restricting themselves to your own ecosystem is not a very good policy because most will simply turn away and look for alternatives instead of jumping through hoops to keep using a product that no longer serves them... I think from now on my MS account will only serve to log into my XBox and that will be it, which is sad, really...

So far in BB HUB and Inbox, I'm able to use my MS free email account with having 2FA on (keep the "Passwordless account" option OFF in the security section), while using the MS provided onetime password. I get the authentication error a few times a day, however all my emails seem to still come through. I think if your free email is important enough it would be best to convert it into a MS Exchange plan 1. I'm thinking of doing this next if there is no remedy soon... It's only $4 a month and it should solve this issue. My other paid MS Exchange account works perfectly and never has this error. Especially if you need ActiveSync to sync all your other items like Notes, Tasks, and Calander etc... However, I only use my Gmail account for contacts as it's much superior to MS on that alone. Plus, you'll eliminate the stupid adds (while using browser to see email) and get 50GB of space with a paid account. I guess you get what you pay for... Not that I want to give MS any more money, but Exchange is about the best email setup out there is right now...

Thanks for the suggestions. My BBHub used to be like that too, I had a persistent authentication error most of the time and a few times a day it synced on its own with the emails coming through. Since Outlook forced me to reset the password I was unable to get it working again so as of now I simply removed the account from BBHub to get rid of the authentication error notification.

Personally I have no intention of paying for a MS plan. I already pay for Google One, which is litterally half the price for double the storage space and much more integrated in the phone, being and Android device. I have slowly and gradually moved from Outlook to GMail since I replaced my BB10 phone with one running Android, so I guess this will be the final nail in the coffin for me to stop using my MS account for anything outside XBox login.

And before paying for MS Exchange and advice you to read a bit more. I have skipped quite a few pages in this thread so there may be something I missed but I recall quite a few people complaining corporate accounts and users with Office360 licenses didn't sync, so even with paid MS Exchange subscriptions maybe some sync and others don't...

You don't need to pay Microsoft for the email, you just setup the Outlook account in Hub via IMAP. It's explained on previous pages. It works fine.
