Why is Mac Outlook Legacy not working today?

I am a support consultant for many customers. Getting a bunch of calls this morning (03/21/2024) about Legacy Mac version 16.8x and above not syncing.

If they switch to New Outlook, no issues. Online is also working.

Why would Legacy stop working today for some? Running Mac OS X 13.x and 14.x with same issue.

Please advise.

    Hello Edd,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Scope of impact: Any user of the legacy Outlook for Mac hosted on the affected infrastructure may be impacted.
Root cause: A recent service maintenance change introduced a code issue that inhibits communication between legacy Outlook for Mac users and the Exchange Online service, which is resulting in the impact.

For affected customers to easily identify the information here, this thread may be closed. I will also post back once this issue is resolved in Service Health.

Thank you for your kind understanding.

Yes the issue has been fixed for a long time.

Although, there might still be a relate issue....

I had an issue with a user just the other day where she was using the latest version of Outlook for Mac as of the date, and yet it was not connecting to the Exchange server (no errors being reported).

I tried extensive troubleshooting (reinstalling Office, deleting lots of Office and Outlook settings and data files). Problem remained.

She was on the "new" version of Outlook and switching to the "Old" version allowed it to work again.

This is actually the opposite of the situation that started this thread months ago (where the Legacy/Old version was not working, but the New one was).

So, bottom line, try switching between Old <> New versions when you have issues.

Is the problem fixed? Because I still have issues for configuring my exchange account on outlook.

Hi. OK. I tried New Outlook and it is worse. It has only imported my emails going back a couple of months! Totally useless. I have refreshed and used 'sync'. No difference. Legacy imported all my emails but only up to 22 March for some reason.

If I compose an email in Legacy Outlook and send to myself, it is Sent but doesn't come into Legacy Inbox. If I send an email to my gmail address it comes into gmail. If I send an email from gmail using my gmail address to my different email address on Outlook, it doesn't come in. I have had a spam email come into my Spam folder this morning, so Outlook seems to be receiving Spam emails but no others.

I am totally confused and stuck.

Could it be something to do with having email software on another device that is using POP and deleting emails or something?

Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

Hi — this was not a MacBook issue. To see if this is the same issue that this thread was about, simply change from Legacy Outlook to the New Outlook. If the New Outlook works and Legacy doesn't, then it may be related to this thread. Although by all accounts the specific issue that this thread was about has been resolved. And we sure hope to not see a reoccurrence of it.

And I guess it never hurts to take the opportunity to note that the whole Legacy/New concern would not be an issue if Microsoft simply made the now-quite-old "New" version a workable, professional-level email program like the Legacy version (mostly) is.
