Settings for using Outlook/Hotmail SMTP via Gmail

I have a few e-mail accounts, all online rather than desktop application, for differing reasons – no, none for anything dishonest or malevolent, not for spamming, nothing negative. And I normally use a gmail account to handle my Hotmail e-mail, and Outlook e-mail. (I have a couple extra account names I use in Hotmail, one is an Outlook name. That is, the e-mail to my Outlook name will come into my Hotmail account, as the Outlook name is effectively an alternate name for my Hotmail account. This is something you can do in Hotmail settings).

Mail coming into my Hotmail account automatically goes over to my Gmail account. When an e-mail originally comes into my Hotmail account using the Outlook name, it is moved over to my Gmail. When I respond to it from gmail, it will go via my Hotmail account using the Outlook name. That is set up in gmail, via SMTM (just like from a desktop e-mail client, which is what I use my gmail as, as my interface for Hotmail, because I find gmail preferable).

OK, now to the point. In recent months, when I get an incoming e-mail in my gmail account from my Outlook (Hotmail) account, and I try to respond to it, it is sent back saying it can’t connect, says I need to check my SMTP settings. Well, I have checked, and I checked to see if Hotmail/Outlook changed them since originally set up. My settings are exactly what Hotmail/Microsoft says they should be.

SMTP server: smtp.office365.com

user name: (that is the Outlook e-mail address)

password: (correct)

Port: 587

All that matches what Microsoft/Hotmail instructs to use.

But there is a problem. Any ideas?

I just tried putting in that new app password in the gmail setup. It would not take it. I got this message:

“Couldn't reach server. Please double-check the server and port number.”

The SMTP Server I have in is: hotmail-com.olc.protection.outlook.com

    The port number is 587.

Try again with this smtp server?

    smtp-mail.outlook.com

    port: 587

Xephyr H, I just tested that, and unfortunately, it still won't take that.

This is kind of maddening. After all, I'm not the only one in this thread having isses with this. I wish I were, at least I would know I'm the promblem. :(

Jan_9dx, I already tested that. It didn't work for me. Why do these things work for some but not for others?

This is what I used for outgoing - I'm using an app password as I have 2FA enabled.

I am not using the gmailify option - just pop.

    This is my outgoing setting:

Note that come September, I don't think this will work as Microsoft is disabling basic auth and I'm pretty sure google is using basic - we'll find out come September. (If it used oauth, it would bring up the Microsoft sign in dialoAuth2 I don't know what gmailify uses.

Thank you, Diane P. I've tried that, and I just tried it again. It is not working for me, gmail said it cannot connect. When I click into more details, it gives this:

    "

    Authentication failed. Please check your username/password. <br>Server returned error: "334 VXNlcm5hbWU6 334 UGFzc3dvcmQ6 535 5.7.139 Authentication unsuccessful, the user credentials were incorrect. [GV2PEPF0000459A.SWEP280.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM 2024-07-18T03:55:57.471Z 08DCA23BDE020126] , code: 535"

    "

My user credentials are the e-mail address I have set up in my Hotmail as an alias. I'm using the correct password, I log in every day with it.

I just thought of one detail I might not have mentioned. Once we send like that, it goes to the receiver from the alias e-mail address. Then they might respond. My issue might be only when responding to that response, and that via the alias e-mail; it does not go through. I don't know if that detail makes any difference, I doubt it.

Now you mention that come September, this might very well all be moot, Gmail will not have the ability to go through Outlook when Outlook makes the change you mention. We will have to find a new way at that piont, or lose all our ability to send responses, the very situation I am in now. This seems to make this entire question now merely academic. And it will be havoc to me, as I have been sending all my e-mail through Hotmail via Gmail as my interface for years (that is nearly all through my main Hotmail address, only some via an alias address). I do not like how Hotmail functions.
