Settings for using Outlook/Hotmail SMTP via Gmail

I have a few e-mail accounts, all online rather than desktop application, for differing reasons – no, none for anything dishonest or malevolent, not for spamming, nothing negative. And I normally use a gmail account to handle my Hotmail e-mail, and Outlook e-mail. (I have a couple extra account names I use in Hotmail, one is an Outlook name. That is, the e-mail to my Outlook name will come into my Hotmail account, as the Outlook name is effectively an alternate name for my Hotmail account. This is something you can do in Hotmail settings).

Mail coming into my Hotmail account automatically goes over to my Gmail account. When an e-mail originally comes into my Hotmail account using the Outlook name, it is moved over to my Gmail. When I respond to it from gmail, it will go via my Hotmail account using the Outlook name. That is set up in gmail, via SMTM (just like from a desktop e-mail client, which is what I use my gmail as, as my interface for Hotmail, because I find gmail preferable). 

OK, now to the point. In recent months, when I get an incoming e-mail in my gmail account from my Outlook (Hotmail) account, and I try to respond to it, it is sent back saying it can’t connect, says I need to check my SMTP settings. Well, I have checked, and I checked to see if Hotmail/Outlook changed them since originally set up. My settings are exactly what Hotmail/Microsoft says they should be.

SMTP server: smtp.office365.com

user name: (that is the Outlook e-mail address)

password: (correct)

Port: 587




All that matches what Microsoft/Hotmail instructs to use. 

But there is a problem. Any ideas?

    Sorry, I have been pulled away from this by life. I don't have much time to delve into it for now. However I just checked again.

    I was using the SMTP server still as SMTP.office365.com. All else is as Fiules immediately above posts. It will not change it to: hotmail-com.olc.protection.outlook.com.

    When I try to change it, I get the message: "Couldn't reach server. Please double-check the server and port number." It doesn't accept the office 365 server, it won't accept the protection.outlook.com one. Or any other I try to change to.

    Unable to make that change, I can't even get to a point where I can test whether it solves the problem.

    I'm having the same issue. My gmail account is still receiving emails from my hotmail account however I am getting a wrong username and password error message when trying to setup the "send as" setting again in gmail. I tried both app password and my actual password. None worked.

    Any help?

    Just to make sure, the "name" should be the name on your Hotmail or Ootlook account, that is, the one that shows in the receiver's Inbox as who it came from, the actual name you use in your Hotmail account, not necessarily the "name" you use for your e-mail address.

    And check "Treat is as an alias."

    Other than that, I don't know, I haven't been able to fix it in my account.

    I tried this and still doesn't work. It was working fine a while back (not sure when it stopped working since I don't send "emails as" my hotmail account from gmail frequently.)

    I don't know if this helps troubleshoot the issue but in the error message details I noticed the following:

    "Authentication unsuccessful, account locked"

    It says my account is locked? I went to hotmail.com to check if a pop-up will show up somewhere to unlock my account but couldn't find any means to unlock my account.

    If someone figures out how to re-enable "send as" feature with hotmail please share.

    This actually worked! Thanks for the tip. I didn't think of checking "treat as an alias" because I didn't previously have it setup this way. I've always had it unchecked.

    check "Treat is as an alias."

    use: smtp-mail.outlook.com

    port 587

    The weirdest part of all this - I have 2 hotmail accounts in my gmail. One works with the older smtp link and treat as an alias unchecked and another with the new smtp link and treat as an alias checked. Sent an email from both right now to test them and they both worked.
