Settings for using Outlook/Hotmail SMTP via Gmail

I have a few e-mail accounts, all online rather than desktop application, for differing reasons – no, none for anything dishonest or malevolent, not for spamming, nothing negative. And I normally use a gmail account to handle my Hotmail e-mail, and Outlook e-mail. (I have a couple extra account names I use in Hotmail, one is an Outlook name. That is, the e-mail to my Outlook name will come into my Hotmail account, as the Outlook name is effectively an alternate name for my Hotmail account. This is something you can do in Hotmail settings).

Mail coming into my Hotmail account automatically goes over to my Gmail account. When an e-mail originally comes into my Hotmail account using the Outlook name, it is moved over to my Gmail. When I respond to it from gmail, it will go via my Hotmail account using the Outlook name. That is set up in gmail, via SMTM (just like from a desktop e-mail client, which is what I use my gmail as, as my interface for Hotmail, because I find gmail preferable). 

OK, now to the point. In recent months, when I get an incoming e-mail in my gmail account from my Outlook (Hotmail) account, and I try to respond to it, it is sent back saying it can’t connect, says I need to check my SMTP settings. Well, I have checked, and I checked to see if Hotmail/Outlook changed them since originally set up. My settings are exactly what Hotmail/Microsoft says they should be.

SMTP server: smtp.office365.com

user name: (that is the Outlook e-mail address)

password: (correct)

Port: 587




All that matches what Microsoft/Hotmail instructs to use. 

But there is a problem. Any ideas?

    Yes, I’ve tried those settings. I just tried it again. It failed, giving the message “Authentication failed.” I get that whether I use the full e-mail address or merely the e-mail user name absent the @outlook.com — see the window below, and that was the second try, without @outlook.com.

    On the page where it starts, for Name, I am using the actual user name of the overall Hotmail account, which is different from the moniker used for the e-mail address. In the past, I have tired using the actual moniker of the e-mail address, it made no difference. 

    In the settings popup, I am not offered STARTTLS, only TLS. I am not offered Authentication Method at all. 

    Baffling.

    You need to use this - and if you have 2-step verification enabled, you need to use an app password - but after mid-Sept, it will stop working. Only Gmailify connection will work - and it is limited to one account. (Also, in some apps you can only use the primary address to log in. )

    SMTP encryption STARTTLS
    Authentication Method OAuth2/Modern Auth

    Thank you, Diane. I understand that I have to use those settings, but as my pics show you, I can't, it is rejecting the SMTP setting, and there is no option to choose STARTTLS, it offers only TLS. I'm not using their 2-factor authorization, but earlier in this thread, I did set that up and test, it did not get it done.

    I am not using an app, so there is no app password in play. I am using it via my computer on the internet, out o Firefox browser.

    This is what I'm using.... and as of today, it is working. (You need to use the full address as the username.)

    But - even if you get it working now, it will stop working in approx. 30 days,.

    Incoming is below - I have 2-step verification enabled and am using an app password for this account.

    Well, what you are showing is for POP, and a different server for that.

    OK full address. I did try that first, and it failed, so I took off @outlook.com. I just tested, and I still can log into my Hotmail account using my outlook alias to do so. It works fine there, not in this SMTP setup.

    I'm wondering if I should put in my hotmal address as "name" of the account, even as I'm setting it up for the outlook alias. I should not need to, as I can log into the account with the alias. But nothing else is working.

    EDIT: Nope. That fails, with the same message.
