Settings for using Outlook/Hotmail SMTP via Gmail

I found the reason I no longer can send from my Gmail account under the name of an Outlook alias that I have connected to via SMTP: 

“Microsoft has removed the ability to connect third-party accounts such as Gmail and sync existing connected accounts from within Outlook.com,” that is, from the online version of Outlook from your computer. I believe that is their unclear way of saying we cannot use SMTP from a Gmail account online from our computer to send through an Outlook alias — the very point of this thread. (If I'm wrong, let me know.)

The info says you might still be able to add the third party account to other Outlook versions, such as Outlook mobile, the desktop versions (clients) of Outlook for Windows or Mac, or by forwarding the e-mails to Outlook, then sending from Outlook, a very burdensome way to accomplish it.

They give no explanation of what they changed to do this. Without an explanation, it seems ludicrous to me to still allow that ability if you do it via a desktop client or mobile — where is the logic in that?

After basic auth is turned off, it will be the only way to sync outlook.com email over to gmail. The dialog below will not work once basic auth is turned off. (Unless Gmail updates it.) At this point, it's probably not worth setting up an account using the dialog below - it will only work for about 6 weeks.

Oh, so Gmailify is an app you can use to do this. I’m not accessing through an app nor from a desktop client, nor from a cell phone. I’m accessing from Gmail online from a computer. 

But you are saying that as of a few weeks ago (at least , when you realized it), Gmailify no longer can sign in on via the primary address, even as you can sign into any of the aliases direct at outlook.com. 

I’m not sure when this problem started for me, but some months back, several months, I believe. Perhaps what the situation is is that Outlook is seeing Gmail online direct from computer as being an app on the desktop, or at least treating it the same way. 

Re your insert and what it says (and again, I am not wanting to use an e-mail client), I already import from my hotmail account to Gmail. That works fine. But if I respond to an e-mail to one of my Outlook aliases from gmail, it does not go through. That is the problem that started several months back. I have to switch to hotmail and respond from there (and today I noticed another new thing that only interferes with me using Hotmail, the very reason I want  to use Gmail as my interface). 

Gmailify is a third party app, not Google? If so, its limitation does not necessarily apply to Gmail or Hotmail orOutlook. But it does tend to signal that Hotmaiil-Outlook changed something that created the limitations. 

If someone could identify what Microsoft changed, maybe this could be addressed somehow. Of course, maybe Microsoft simply isn’t allowing use via app or other interface (such as my Gmail account online) of more than one account. I can’t switch from my primary account to my one alias, so it means I can’t respond to any alias other than out of my Hotmail account.  The whole point of setting up the link was to avoid having to do that!

On the sign in - I noticed a few weeks ago that I can only sign in using the primary account to add the account to apps. I can sign into uotlook.com using any address - only apps are limited.

OK, so come Sept., oAuth2 will work with gmailify (don’t really know what that is, I hope it is automatic, or that we get the info we need to set it up). 

RE the current issue:

OK, I now see that “Manage how you sign in to Microsoft page.” And there is it using the “primary account” term, unlike the previous page. See my page below. And you can see I have the primary account under “hotmail.com.” I have been allowed to make aliases only as “outlook.com” addresses. 

In my insert below, see the bottom, where I have put in an arrow pointing to a link to “Change sign-in preferences.” I clicked through to that, and the page that comes up, second insert, provides for allowing login to any or all alias accounts; the primary account is check on by default, and cannot be turned off. (I had not seen the link leading to the second insert previously, so now more info is at hand for this.)

As you see, all my aliases are checked on, to allow sign-in through them. And in the past, I had set them up and used them from Gmail without this issue that arose some months back, the issue of it not sending from gmail, I have to instead go to hotmail to send via the alias. The gmail SMTP use of that to log in under a particular alias is being rejected, despite my second insert below showing I have turned on the function to allow login via that alias. And again, I have been able to send from gmail in the past. 

I would think allowing sign-in via an alias would include signing in via SMTP to allow that pass through. This is the problem now, it is blocking that. Has Microsoft intentionally done something some months back to stop allowing that? I have tested, and I can still sign into my Hotmail account using my alias to do so instead. 

(Strange system to making an insert, but it works.)
