Outlook 2016 will not take gmail after end of May 2022

Hi Hal,

That sounds easy until I find there is no option to "generate an App Password".

All I get is agreeing to use my android phone and create a backup key for it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Lets be sure you have followed all the steps....

* Open GMAIL in a brower.....sign in if need be

* Click on your symbol...top right

* Click on MANAGE YOUR GOOGLE ACCT

* Left Side...click on SECURITY

* Than middle of Page see SIGNING IN TO GOOGLE

Here you will see 2 Step verification....If it is OFF, turn it ON...follow steps as prompted

After you have completed 2 Step verification. GO BACK to where you saw SIGNING IN TO GOOGLE

Now you will see LESS SECURE APPS, or Create a Less Secure Passwork..or something similar....follow promots that will generate a 16 Digit Password for your Google email

Enter this 16 Digit password in OUTLook replacing the one you have been using

Are we talking about the Outlook desktop app? You have to first turn on 2-factor authentication in Google before the generate App Password settings appear:

That did it, although in turning on 2SV (this is the third time) Google requires one to start all over again to initiate a 2SV then always refuses the secondary back up phone number requested requiring one to select an alternate method of secondary verification which is a series of 10, one time use numbers, then it finally allows you to turn 2SV "ON". After going back (with "back arrows") I was finally able to create the magic 16 character Outlook code, change the Outlook password for gmail and it WORKED!

The thing that is incredibly stupid is from my (Outlook) end is all I did was change the outlook account password, while Google forces one on their site to go through a lot of useless machinations (I don't use my smart phone to access Google) creating a bunch of useless keys, then requiring the user to get a key they produce.

Why not have the user just request a key after signing into their gmail account?

A convoluted quagmire of grossly overly complicated stupidity, IMHO.

I'm curious when you say "refuses the secondary back up phone number requested", did you provide a good phone number and Google refused to accept it? I set mine up so it would text a cellphone and/or voice call a landline phone, plus, I can add more of them of either type, so I'm a bit astonished if Google refused to accept a phone number. Let me add that Google will work with an Authenticator app, there are many available for both iOS and Android. Please don't bet the whole farm on that list of one-time numbers.
