Follow the instructions from Google Support I just posted. You don't need to change anything in Outlook. Just follow the instructions I provided and everything will work as well as it was before Google created this mess.
How do I set up two-factor authentication in Outlook 2016?
I'm running fully patched Windows 11 and Office Pro 2019 on my laptop. This morning, I could not use Gmail through Outlook. When I tried to retrieve my email, I little window popped up saying the password wasn't valid. I'd seen the warnings from Google saying "less secure apps may stop working on May 30th 2022" but they gave no instructions on how to overcome this new hurtle. I began badgering Google's support site and getting simple answers that didn't help. I got belligerent asking for step by step instructions on how to fix the mess they'd created. I finally struck a nerve and got this reply:

I assume you know how to enter your password in Outlook, and that you can follow the instructions to enable 2-step verification and get an App Password. The instructions can be found at the links provided, but I will paste them here, too.

This fix worked for my situation by simply copying and pasting the "App Password" over the old password in the pop up error message.
My church office was having the same problem running Windows 10 using Office Pro 2003 (the best version of Office ever released) on their desktop. I walked the secretary through the steps above and had her paste the generated app password in the pop up just like I'd done and it worked for her also.
