How to set "Unread" as the default inbox filter in Outlook, and still be able to view Read messages

Another article describes setting the default filter in Outlook to Unread under View Settings. I did this and found that after doing so, I was no longer able to view Read messages, they just didn't appear in the inbox after setting the Inbox filter to All.

What I'm looking for is a setting that will make Unread the default filter setting, but still allow me to see Read messages when switching the filter to All or Read. Does this setting exist?

I see tons of comments echoing the original request and no response from Microsoft. Is this going to be fixed?

Currently, I have my inbox set to the All/Unread option. I click on Unread and read through my emails. Then, I leave the tab to check on my calendar or look in other folders. I do this 10+ times per day.

Every time I return to my inbox I am forced to click on Unread again. That is a very annoying step to have to constantly repeat.

At a minimum, it should remember my last setting/view when on my Inbox.

It could also simply be a default setting that I could set as a user.

Currently it is very annoying and disappointing.

After making the Search Folder a Favorite, you can use these steps for it to appear upon Start-up:

To make a specific folder appear when you start Microsoft Outlook, you can:

    1. Click the File tab
    2. Click Options, then Advanced
    3. Under Outlook start and exit, click Browse
    4. In the Select Folder dialog box, select the folder you want to appear

Search folders do not work on shared mailboxes that i can see, there is no option to add a search folder to anything other than my main email address and i would like to be able to keep the unread set on that even more.

The unread option does not need to be set as the default somewhere in the settings, i just want it to remember what my previous choice was, either all or unread. i change back and forth during the day so changing the default in settings multiple times is not the answer for me. just remember what it was last set to and respect that. And if you always use unread then that means it will stay as your view.

There are 7 pages of people asking for the same thing extending back 2 years. That sucks.

I actually found the answer to this. Posting here for future of the internet:

To add an unread filter to favorites in Outlook, you can follow these steps:

    1. Right-click on the ‘Unread Mail’ folder and select ‘Show in Favorites’^1^.
    2. Alternatively, scroll to the bottom of your folder list, right-click on "Search Folders," and create a new search folder for "Unread mail." Then add it to favorites.
    3. Put at the top of your favorites list

It would be much appreciated when Outlook remembers the setting and not automaticly switches back to 'All'.

Looking forward to this fix please.

There was an initial response from the Microsoft Moderator, but nothing since. I wonder if our pleas for help are being heard?
