Another article describes setting the default filter in Outlook to Unread under View Settings. I did this and found that after doing so, I was no longer able to view Read messages, they just didn't appear in the inbox after setting the Inbox filter to All.
What I'm looking for is a setting that will make Unread the default filter setting, but still allow me to see Read messages when switching the filter to All or Read. Does this setting exist?

Ditto here. I would like a default option to see Unread only.
The option is there in the old desktop Outlook. Why take it away in the new app?
Would love to be able to set "Unread" as the default Inbox filter.

I'm trying out the latest Desktop App version. The previous software, you could have an "Unread" folder.
This latest version only has an "Unread" filter, and when you navigate out of the Inbox and then back, it resets the filter to "All".
I want a place where I can see only Unread emails.

In outlook we have different view sets for the Inbox Folder.
Inbox set as : All / Unread and inbox set as : Focused / Other.
This is controlled by going to view > ticking or unticking the Show Focused Inbox button.
What I suggest you is to use the All / Unread view.
When you set your inbox as All / Unread, normally by default it should already meet your requirements.
Clicking on All will show all emails including read and unread will just show unread emails unless you change the filter; clicking on Unread, will just show unread emails unless you change the filter.
If you use the focused inbox, you will have to change the filtering, as it is by default showing all emails.

In Google email where I came from,
UNREAD - emails are on the top
READ - emails are on the bottom
This is helpful so I can focus on Unread only.
