Problems with hotmail and onedrive storage?

From my experience dealing with Microsoft support, there is no way Onedrive can be disabled or decoupled from your hotmail account. The only two options are either delete any emails with attachments until emails are below 5GB or pay the subscription.

Microsoft are forcing hotmail users to pay for a free service.

If there is a class action case, then it's more likely to draw their attention.

I recommend contacting your local and national newspapers, tv and radio channels. And any local politicians representative you have. The more of us talk about this to these organisations and others, the more likely this will be in the news and put pressure on Microsoft.

I have a free hotmail account (15 GB storage limit) and am within this storage limit. I also have a Ondrive account (comes automatically with your hotmail account). The storage capacity is 5GB and is unused.

A few weeks ago this empty Onedrive account became full, because my Outlook attachments popped up there and instantly took my storage capacity to over the 5GB limit (twice as much).

Since then I haven't been able to receive or send emails at all, even though my hotmail storage is well within the storage limit.

Technical support at Microsoft claim that there is a bug that their engineers have been trying to fix. Not sure though this is accurate, as I've read nothing about it in the news. On Microsoft's website they say they changed storage rules in Feb 2023, so that Onedrive automatically captures your hotmail storage capacity as well. Effectively, this is a reduction of your hotmail storage capacity from 15GB to 5GB. Pay up or delete your emails is what this is about.

Anyone else facing this problem? Any ideas what is really causing this? A technical bug or an attempt by Microsoft to force hotmail account holders to pay a monthly subscription?

Microsoft says, "You have 5 GB of free cloud storage with your Microsoft account shared across your files and photos in OneDrive, attachments in Outlook.com and your Microsoft 365 apps. You also get 15 GB of free Outlook.com email storage which is separate from your Microsoft cloud storage." Why are they putting all the attachments that take up most space in the ONE DRIVE folder???

In my opinion there should be a choice to unlink "one drive" from my email address... another helpful option would be give us an easy way to export every email with attachment to a computer or hard drive...

I am being told by phone support to have faith that this is an emerging problem and Microsoft will fix it. I don't know if I believe that though. I spent hours on chat with support that told me that I need to buy storage to fix it.... There is so much controversy with many of the things that are going on here. From the support staff that is telling me to pay up or delete emails... to the ones that are telling me that its a known issue and it will be fixed... I have not got a solid answer yet... I feel that most of them are not trained or informed well enough, BUT THEY ARE ALL VERY POLITE AND CARING OF THE SITUATION. I appreciate them but I again STILL have not got my issue resolved and I am not able to send or receive emails...

I am deleting/going through the 25 years of emails and it has taken me 20 plus hours so far and have not even began to put a dent in it. I started off with the larger sent folder and went from there. I started off at the 30 MB attachments and now I am only 1 GB through it and I am at the 3 MB emails... (This will literally take months to go through)

All the attachments are most of the reason we are saving this stuff and most of the reason we need 15GB and not 5 GB, I am finding a whole lot of stuff that has sentimental value and its tough to delete...

I am getting frustrated as I wait patiently for this all to be fixed properly....

I am at 99% in the 5 GB One drive folder now.

1:37 Am April 9 2023 in Canada... I just spent the last 10 hours deleting messages to my recycle bin and saving files to computer... Now I can receive emails... Lets see if any of this gets resolved... I have 30 days until my emails get deleted from the recycle bin...

Hi, I have had exactly the same problem here in the UK. Been trying to delete it taking so much time as others in the thread have mentioned.

Clearly, there is no clear answer to this issue at the moment but I am going to do further research. In the meantime, I am without email although I will try using another account. Doesn't help much though unless all hotmail messages can be moved across. Not happy at all@
