Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

Same problem, tired of waiting for MS or Ggl to fix it.

I loaded all my gmail accounts into Mailbird and they all work.

Not quite the same as Outlook, but manageable.

Sadly this hasn't worked for me. I am directed to a Chrome page - in German, without translation available - which tells me to speak to my administrator. Which is lovely n'all. But also sh**. The little ongoing wars between Google and MS are really childish - but have real world implications. Regulation just needs to happen for the tech behemoths who treat their customers so badly.

    Hi SHipps40,

    Referring to your suggestion.

I am an advanced user. I am a Windows and Office user since MS-DOS version 1.0. Guess that indicates my age.

I tried all the recommended solution. Final was to clean install windows 10 and reinstall Microsoft Office 365.

Still Outlook cannot connect to Gmail (IMAP).

However, Mail for Widows can easily connect without the going to "Generate" password procedure.

I guess now I would have to use Microsoft Office Outlook 365 for @outlook.com emails and Mail for Windows for @gmail.com. I do not use other email services.

    My hardware details:

Yes - likewise. I’ve just accepted that one party here does not want users to be able to connect Outlook to Gmail any more so I’ve deleted GMail from my laptop. I get an error saying that my browser (Chrome) is the issue. What my browser has to do with my Mail app I have no idea

It feels so childish that the big tech companies do this stuff to each other and therefore actually to their own users. Strong regulation cannot come soon enough
