Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

I am frustrated as well because now I can't use outlook 2016 with my gmail and I do all our business through there. Using gmail online is not the best. This started last week for me and I can't seem to get my outlook to work at all and it's making me nuts! I just don't know what to do here to get it to work.

Steps #1 & #2 should get Gmail working with Outlook 2016. A few users have had to switch from POP to IMAP but most have not had to.

    1. Turn on 2-step verification. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185839?
    2. And create an app password. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/185833?
    3. Check Gmail through other email platforms (IMAP and POP settings) https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7104828
    4. Sign in with backup codes https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1187538?

    Don

Don you have been so helpful but another poster, Janice Nixon, has pointed out that we can turn the less secure apps preference on again. At least I just did and so did she.

Go to Google home page, not the email setting as I was doing. third down is Security->scroll down the less secure setting option preference is there (it always was, I had just forgotten).

    I turned it back on.

Mail is getting through to Outlook 2016 using POP3 again without 2 step verification or new google password.

Long may it last and to heck with Google I'm changing my email server.

I did finally give up and use the 2 step verification when google kicked me out again because of less secure apps. Really? They have WAY too much power. That said, it would be good for MS to figure out the issue with gmail and fix it once and for all.

I don’t blame you for moving to a different server, it’s just personal use for me and I got it functioning, hated to have to acquiesce to google, but I’m not up to the challenge of getting a new email and going through all that. WAY too many places to have to change it. Good luck!

I tried using outlook.com but already in only a few days, my password has been unacceptable several times and the username I had to open 365 a year ago has been co-opted by someone else even though "that can't happen" etc.

I read somewhere, if it's free what do you expect?

That hit home! Of course - advertising, too much knowledge of our lives etc.

I'm looking at Proton Mail. It's Swiss. Apparently I can move mail to Outlook, easily and delete mail from the browser. I can still use POP3, have encrypted mail and Proton has no access to contents.

All those things are very enticing for less than $10 CAD month.

    Fingers crossed.
