Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

Please stop going through the same tired instructions connecting Gmail to my outlook. here is why...

My last email from Gmail arrived on my computer on Sunday, March 26 at 10:25 Mountain. After that, I got a send/receive error in the lower right of the Outlook window. and i got the dreaded message...

"We couldn't connect to the incoming (POP) server using the specified encryption method. please check the incoming (POP) server encryption method and try again"

    • Don't ask me to repair my profile. I have tried repeatedly and get the same error.
    • Nothing on my Outlook was changed, period!
    • I HAVE two factor authentication on Google
    • I HAVE an application specific 16 character password for Gmail.

I know I am asking too much for Microsoft to reach out and research the problem, because a large part of the Outlook community has the same problem. I would be nice because it means I am a customer and not the target market for a multi-billion dollar advertising business...

If anyone has a solution, I am all ears.

I have done this before and again in attempting to resolve the issue. I don't get the IMAP connection lost as much just occasionally but the speed of the email send and receive is abysmal
