Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

OMG! I have worked hours on trying to figure out why Outlook suddenly was asking for a server password. Repairing, checking settings - your solution worked and I thank you SOOOO much!

Don, it's no wonder I'm flummoxed, I didn't know to check any of these details before searching for a solution.

Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again.

I kept getting the above message, I'm now editing this post in order to post my answer. I used Start->Mail but tried to open in Outloook Office as normal.

(I had no idea Start->Mail existed. Still no clue what I would do with it)

My objective in using Outlook 365 is to remove my mail from any web mail. I used to have Telus web mail but that company decided to move us all to Telus/G-Suite. I am not happy because it caused endless messing with gmail to get sorted out initially due to the "less secure accounts" option, but that is now gone, removed by "my administrator" Telus is not responding with any email support, refers us to gmail!!!.

I thought asking GSuite my who Administrator would be but Gsuite query elicited this unhelpful response..................

    Help me find my administrator

Your administrator is someone associated with telus.net, not Google. We can’t tell you exactly who your administrator is. But here are ideas of who to ask.

    Your administrator might be:

    • The person who gave you your username, *** Email address is removed for privacy *** Telus in 1993
    • Someone in your IT department or Help desk (at a company or school) personal account
    • The person who manages your email service or web site (in a small business or club) personal account

Any thoughts you have will be happily accepted, meanwhile I shall scream with impotent frustration at Microsoft and google!!!!

    Susan

When you see the "mail server rejected your login" message are you given the opportunity to login with a different password?

I too went that route, I added my gmail account in "Mail App"-> Settings (not in Outlook settings) on my PC as directed. All it did was lock my phone out of Google web mail.

Outlook on my PC still didn't open and error message as follows (why can't the url in these be coped and pasted?)

Task *** Email address is removed for privacy *** - receiving reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your mail server rejceted your login. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account settings. The server responded :-ERR [AUTH)] Application-specific password required: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer.185833

And then I went around in circles. I'm also using POP, could that be the glitch????

I did manage to use the Authentication app for my phone but it kept timing out before I could get through the login process. Then I saw it runs constantly so I get the code then start login.

It's not your fault that Microsoft has so many things called outlook. Please clarify...

    1. Do you have Office Outlook (such as Outlook 365, Outlook 2016, etc.) installed?
    2. Which version of Windows?

    3. > added my gmail account in "Mail App"-> Settings (not in Outlook settings)

Does Mail App mean the Windows 10 (or 11) mail app ("Mail" on the Start Menu?)

    Which "outlook settings"? Outlook 365?

    4. > Outlook on my PC still didn't open

Does this mean that the Windows Mail App (not Office Outlook) couldn't access the @outlook.com email account?
