Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

Can you sign in and change your Telus Email password?

Look for Change your Telus email password at

HI Don, I am using the same password for Telus in Outlook as I am for the Telus G-suite Google account. Gmail set up won't allow less secure apps choice, a recent change apparently. Outlook is considered a less secure app. Microsoft and Google need to sort this.

    Meanwhile.........

I am not any sort of expert, I try stuff I see here and sometimes I can even reverse what doesn't work. I did manage to arrange 2 Step verification based on advice here for access to G-Suite on my iPhone, a total pain because it wants it every time even though I selected "not again' so I have turned it off.

I don't have that on my PC.

Outlook stopped working once Google disallowed the "less secure apps"

    Still flummoxed.

I do appreciate your patience, thank you Susan

OMG! I have worked hours on trying to figure out why Outlook suddenly was asking for a server password. Repairing, checking settings - your solution worked and I thank you SOOOO much!
