Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

I too went that route, I added my gmail account in "Mail App"-> Settings (not in Outlook settings) on my PC as directed. All it did was lock my phone out of Google web mail.

Outlook on my PC still didn't open and error message as follows (why can't the url in these be coped and pasted?)

Task ******@xxxxx.xxz - receiving reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your mail server rejceted your login. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account settings. The server responded :-ERR [AUTH)] Application-specific password required: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer.185833

And then I went around in circles. I'm also using POP, could that be the glitch????

I did manage to use the Authentication app for my phone but it kept timing out before I could get through the login process. Then I saw it runs constantly so I get the code then start login.

I've been trying to get through this off and on for a few weeks. There are a couple of gotchas here that are giving others trouble.

    First, I have Outlook 365.

I never deleted my existing Gmail POP settings when trying to fix this. I simply disabled the account in the Advanced settings while I could get to the bottom of this.

Setting up IMAP or re-setting POP with the "generated" password simply wouldn't work in the Account Settings. Not 100%. I kept generating test "sent" messages but wasn't receiving anything. And the setup would report as failed.

What worked was waiting for the password prompt at the SEND/RECEIVE stage. Entering the "generated" password there (and allowing it to be saved) finally solved the issue. I'm still on POP--which is what I prefer. I sort emails into folders based on who they're from not what email address they were sent to. I don't like the default of having a new Inbox for IMAP emails.

The only strange thing is that this emptied out old "sent" emails that were still on the Gmail server. So there was some clean-up of unexpected emails. There is a POP setting on Gmail to only enable POP from this point forward. On the other Gmail account, I was sure to select that before re-connecting with the account.

I'm not sure about a new Gmail account for existing Gmail accounts that have ALWAYS been working in the past, enabling 2-step authentication and creating a "generated" app password for email on a Windows computer is the new thing. Using that generated password in place of the Google Account password is all that needs to happen in Outlook. No Account settings needed changing.

I use Outlook 365 and I had to do the google 2-step verification after I could not get any emails to download, once I turned on 2-step verification and used the google generated password, everything worked fine.
