Why is an IMAP Inbox Only Displaying 10,000 Items When There are Many More Emails on the Server?

Search through Yahoo's documentation I found a workaround that allows downloading of all the emails.

It's just a matter of changing the IMAP settings for 3rd party mail apps.

However I had to delete the predefined "Yahoo" account and setup "other mail account".

I entered my account, one-time generated password, had to wait 10-20 seconds to get a time-out

and then was able to enter the IMAP and SMTP settings.

The main change is for the incoming mails:

This solved my issue - and maybe it might help others in the community.

I have AOL, not yahoo, but I think the same applies. I don't THINK you had to delete your email account. It's really strange. If you open the account settings under outlook I do not see a way to change the server info. BUT go into control panel... may be a little different if you open control panel directly but I go thru the menu and it's user accounts, then mail (microsoft outlook). From there choose email accounts.

It opens something that looks exactly the same as from within outlook except that change has the server URLs, user name and password. And under more settings on the advanced tab they have the ports and some other settings.

Haven't tried; I'd have to dig up the info on app passwords in case I need to change that if I use a different server. We only change the income server, right?

(I think I have an email on how to set up the app password, but it might be more than 10,000 emails away! I can do one of my rare logins to actual AOL and search for app passwords I guess. JUST to be prepared; I seem to recall I was able to copy from one device to another... that may have been android, as I don't see a way in outlook to display it.

I did that because that was on a button in the ouitlook change. I did NOT want to hit the button only to find that it reset all my settings! The help did NOT address that button in outlook but covered the additional detail in the control panel one. If anyone is brave enough to clock on that reset button from outlook let us know, but I don't need it; I can easily do it from control panel. Just need to wait until I can dig up or search AOL to know how to change the app password, in case I need it.

I found it (thru control panel) in Outlook 2016 in WIn7 and it also looked the same in Outlook 2021 in Win10. As I said, didn't change it and won't until I can generate the app password if needed. (I thought I read somewhere that app passwords weren't needed anymore.)

Thank you very much, Daniel. This can get most of us back working. However as VanTeper suggests we really need to hear from Yahoo. A third-party site is calling this Resolved, but we really don't know if this is "the" SOLUTION.

(A) What was Yahoo's design plan and its reasons?

(B) What is the purpose and life cycle of the new IMAP server? Is it a permanent change to improve performance & scalability, or a workaround for now? Will users with local clients or Inboxes over 10,000 be diverted or migrated to this server?

(C) Was this limitation a response to some emergency or urgent condition? Otherwise why not just migrate to new, improved server protocols without severe limitations (pulling the rug out) from everyone?

(D) How did such a change get though Change Management without effective communcations with users, business partners, service (email) providers, and all other direct parties? Think of the situation with app passwords. Remember how long the communcation campaign was to get all users in all environments ready for the changes.

(E) Is there a fundamental change in service management by Yahoo, such that they no longer believe in enabling local email client applications?

I just changed my Outlook 365 Incoming Server to - export.imap.mail.yahoo.com . That did the trick. I did not have to delete anything or perform any other feats of derring-do.

Use 2010 w/ AOL and can access settings directly through Outlook. I have run through the steps below but haven't implemented as I do use an app password currently. I may have it saved, but had assumed a new app PW could be generated at any time, so maybe not. It does seem others have had success on the Apple forum and here w/ getting a new one, but Yahoo still claiming no resolution just a day ago, makes me hesitant.

Outlook Steps to Access Server:

Click File

Click Accounts Settings

Email Tab - Double Click Name

Dialog box opens "Internet Email Settings"

Server Information:

Incoming

Outgoing

Log on Info:

User Name & Password.

In the above scenario - seems you should be able to just add 'export.' in front:

**export.**imap.aol.com  instead of  imap.aol.com (current)

In the Advanced window, port is currently 993 for the incoming server and from Daniel's link - the port remains the same.

Finally, even if this solution is temporary? as alluded to below, it may give users time to copy, archive, folder emails. I can still search 'all mail items' in my Outlook Data file, for which I have a separate Inbox, 2nd .pst, to call up older emails.

If the IMAP path works, by all means go for it and use it. But I’d wager that that path too will become

restricted to 10,000 messages as what appear deliberate changes are rolled out throughout the VerizonYahoo servers.
