Why is an IMAP Inbox Only Displaying 10,000 Items When There are Many More Emails on the Server?

Changing the IMAP server name to export... seems to have worked for me too. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the remedy (albeit possibly temporary) that Yahoo/AOL offered in response to all the outrage people like us produced. Obviously without admitting their screwup in the first place.

Good idea. I will copy all emailed from before this year to a new PST (already had a PST from years ago); by copying it I can still search the current one... UNLESS they go back to 10,000. So, it's a fallback if and only if needed.

Found the app password link: https://help.aol.com/articles/Create-and-manage-app-password . And unlike yahoo, no note bout it not working now. You can manage existing ones, so I thought I could get the password from before. They list all the generated ones, but all I can manage is to delete them. Oh well. But I will only use it if the saved one doesn't work (I have 3 IDs). I don't think the others have anywhere near 10,000 emails. Checked. They don't. And an aha -- I was able to find the email that told me about app passwords. FYO, although it came several times, the last one was 10/18/2020. Sure enough, the same URL as above. So when I get a chance, I'll JUST change the incoming imap server on the small rarely used account and see if it works. Should also tell me if I need to generate a new app password. If it works, then I'll change it on the big one and if necessary, generate a new app password. And as I said, COPY emails from before this year to a new PST. I hope that won't need to be used as it means I have to do searches in at least two places.

Thank you very much, Daniel. This can get most of us back working. However as VanTeper suggests we really need to hear from Yahoo. A third-party site is calling this Resolved, but we really don't know if this is "the" SOLUTION.

(A) What was Yahoo's design plan and its reasons?

(B) What is the purpose and life cycle of the new IMAP server? Is it a permanent change to improve performance & scalability, or a workaround for now? Will users with local clients or Inboxes over 10,000 be diverted or migrated to this server?

(C) Was this limitation a response to some emergency or urgent condition? Otherwise why not just migrate to new, improved server protocols without severe limitations (pulling the rug out) from everyone?

(D) How did such a change get though Change Management without effective communcations with users, business partners, service (email) providers, and all other direct parties? Think of the situation with app passwords. Remember how long the communcation campaign was to get all users in all environments ready for the changes.

(E) Is there a fundamental change in service management by Yahoo, such that they no longer believe in enabling local email client applications?

I have AOL, not yahoo, but I think the same applies. I don't THINK you had to delete your email account. It's really strange. If you open the account settings under outlook I do not see a way to change the server info. BUT go into control panel... may be a little different if you open control panel directly but I go thru the menu and it's user accounts, then mail (microsoft outlook). From there choose email accounts.

It opens something that looks exactly the same as from within outlook except that change has the server URLs, user name and password. And under more settings on the advanced tab they have the ports and some other settings.

Haven't tried; I'd have to dig up the info on app passwords in case I need to change that if I use a different server. We only change the income server, right?

(I think I have an email on how to set up the app password, but it might be more than 10,000 emails away! I can do one of my rare logins to actual AOL and search for app passwords I guess. JUST to be prepared; I seem to recall I was able to copy from one device to another... that may have been android, as I don't see a way in outlook to display it.

I did that because that was on a button in the ouitlook change. I did NOT want to hit the button only to find that it reset all my settings! The help did NOT address that button in outlook but covered the additional detail in the control panel one. If anyone is brave enough to clock on that reset button from outlook let us know, but I don't need it; I can easily do it from control panel. Just need to wait until I can dig up or search AOL to know how to change the app password, in case I need it.

I found it (thru control panel) in Outlook 2016 in WIn7 and it also looked the same in Outlook 2021 in Win10. As I said, didn't change it and won't until I can generate the app password if needed. (I thought I read somewhere that app passwords weren't needed anymore.)

Hi! Thank you to everyone who is addressing this issue. It is VERY disturbing to me! I had about 50,000 emails on Outlook 365. It is the latest version. One day I opened Outlook and watched my inbox number go down to less then 10,000. It does not even go up to 10,000. I have no emails prior to 1/14/22 in my Outlook inbox. But on my Verizon AOL email site on the web, I have over 58,000 emails.
