Is there any point to reporting phishing emails?

Well, given there are 103 emails in my junk folder after I emptied it last night,.. and it's only 9:00am. I'm thinking I asked the wrong question. I don't want to report them any more, I only think that's made it worse given the increase in junk/phishing emails.

My "Real" issue is that I don't want to see these at all!! It is so blatantly obvious that these are junk/phishing that they could be deleted before they are even sent to my account. Why is that not being done?? I'm more than happy to have a good email deleted every now and then if that's what it takes. If it's important, they try again or another way.

Allowing all this obvious **** into our emails is extremely dangerous! Open the wrong one, click something by mistake and you could be in for a nightmare.

Obviously, Microsoft doesn't really care about our security.

yahoo, gmail don't appear to have this issue/volume. I might get 'A' junk email. I get minimum 2-4 a day from hotmail/outlook. Very disappointing

I agree and would bet there is a way to know if the emails have been "read" or opened which is my beef with Microsoft Reporting extension which now requires you to open the message to report it. Previously at least the 32bit Outlook extension allowed you to report phishing from the sidebar or by right clicking on the unopened message. Now there is only the button on the ribbon which is greyed out unless the message is open

there should also be an easy way for messages sent logged in to the same user account to set a "validation" flag in the header so that emails without this flag can be treated as potential spam/spoof but when I look at some of the headers which "PASS" spam filtering I see many red flags which go ignored.

Definitely agree MS could benefit from hiring hackers to deal with this. Despite their other issues, Google does a far better job of spam filtering on their gmail domain even if they seem to permit hosting some of these villains...takes one to know one I guess lol

I agree--stuff that is obvious junk (such as senders who use part of my email address, or who have gibberish domain names) shouldn't even make it to my junk mailbox at all. Send the dubious stuff there, but completely block anything that is clearly not legitimate. I had an email from "the IRS" yesterday that was so clearly not it was laughable. It contained a link to a PDF that I knew not to click on, but accidental clicks happen all the time.

I have to wonder if reporting the phishing doesn't only report to Microsoft (assuming it does that) but alerts the senders that there's someone monitoring the email and encourages them to redouble their efforts. That's what it seems like, anyway.
