Can't Generate 3rd Party App Password (AOL) for Outlook 2016 Desktop using Windows 11

I have been using Outlook 2016 Desktop for Windows for quite awhile to access my AOL - (Verizon.net) emails. Just recently, I can't sync my AOL emails to my Outlook 2016 Desktop app. I can not generate an app password via AOL in order to sync and download my new emails to Outlook. I have contacted AOL several times and they are NO help at all. How can I generate a 3rd Party App password to make my outlook work as before? Any ideas/solutions on how to get around this issue?

P.S. I am using Outlook 2016 Desktop (Windows 11), not Outlook 365 or Outlook.com app.

Hi Vinnie, hope you're doing well. I’m Ian, and I’m happy to help you today.

    Sorry to hear this one.

In this case only the applicable email service provider (which is AOL) can help you to generate a 3rd Party App password.

Outlook doesn't have any access or capability to generate this one.

This is a user-to-user support forum and I am a fellow user.

I hope this helps, but please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks for the response ... I was hoping for a work around, but now I am just totally frustrated! I have been informed that AOL has disabled the "Generate App Password." When you try to generate an app password you get the following error message "Sorry, this feature is not available right now!" AOL says they are working on a resolution, but it has been down since at least October 2022.

I really don't think they are working on a fix or enable this function, because by not doing so, they force the user to use the AOL mail app, which includes all of their paid "Advertisers and Advertisements." It's all about the revenue $$$!

I have been using Outlook for business and home for many years and have a ton of folders in Outlook. I need to find a way to export all my Outlook folders (with all my emails) to AOL and they aren't much help.

I'm sorry to hear this one. Yes this is frustrating since they cannot do anything on their side. I heard that this happened last Oct 2022 and I saw that some AOL user already managed to "Generate App Password" since last January 19, 2023. You can try to do it again and hopefully this is working this time.

    Dear Rian,

The app password is not working anymore. It was working up to last week somewhere since I did receive email using app password and imap.

AOL support explained to me today that app password is not working due to an issue with Microsoft. I also had the feeling as mentioned by Vinnie that they wanted to sell me the AOL premium solution for desktop.

For the time being they foresee no other solution.

Hopefully a different solution/workaround will popup somewhere. In the meantime I can get to my email on my iOS device and via webmail.

    Regards,

Thank you for the response. Believe it or not, I just recently tried generating an app password and it WORKED! I was shocked. It hadn't worked for months and then I tried it and it worked! Not sure for how long though, but if you need to generate an app password do it before they take it offline again! Lol
