The Microsoft account login server has detected too many repeated authentication attempts. Please wait a moment and try again. HOW LONG IS THAT MOMENT?

Today I received an email from Microsoft saying

Security alert
We think that someone else might have accessed the Microsoft account ed**___@___.___. When this happens, we require you to verify your identity with a security challenge and then change your password the next time you sign in.

I've changed logged in, went through the security checks, and I've changed my password, but now when I try to log in, it tells me

Something went wrong and we can't sign you in at the moment. Please try again later. The Microsoft account login server has detected too many repeated authentication attempts. Please wait a moment and try again.

I'm on a Mac, and I can't access it through the Mail app, nor through a web browser. I've cleared the cache, I've restarted both the app and the browsers and the computer, I've tried different browsers, as well as Incongito Window mode, with no luck. It works on my phone Outlook app, though. But I can't access my emails on my computer?

Any ideas? How long do I have to wait to try it again? I've allowed an hour to pass and I'm still experiencing the same issue.

Thanks.

    Found a solution! I had the same issue today, with that message showing up every 30 seconds;

Something went wrong and we can't sign you in at the moment. Please try again later. The Microsoft account login server has detected too many repeated authentication attempts. Please wait a moment and try again.

    I'm using Microsoft Edge.

My solution was to refresh the page, block all the active cookies (by clicking on the lock icon next to the address bar), then to unblock them again (using the same lock icon - otherwise Outlook is not working anyways). Someone else mentioned the issue seemed related to cookies. It seems to be the case.

I've just started getting this error message.

It seems like a broken workflow. If someone is unsuccessfully trying to login as me why disable my access to the account?

Surely Microsoft is only making Denial of Service attacks really easy by doing this. By all means enforce 2FA.

I have the same problem and waiting 24 hours did not fix it. Like many others on this thread, I need MS Teams for work and I am now unable to use it.

Microsoft development team - please get on with this patch!

I think I just figured this out for Chrome, at least.

I am using Windows 11 and Chrome, with a personal MS account. I get the error message when I am signed into Microsoft account in a tab, but then select "Account Settings" - it wants me to re-log in, or re-enter my password, or it wants to authenticate me, or honestly I'm not sure what it's doing, but it takes me to a new tab to do so. Then I get the error message:

"Something went wrong and we can't sign you in right now. Please try again later. The Microsoft account login server has detected too many repeated authentication attempts. Please wait a moment and try again."

On the same tab where I got the error message:

To the left of the url, there is a filters icon. I clicked that. I selected Cookies and Site Data. Then I selected Manage On Device Site Data. On the popup window, there were two Microsoft sites listed at bottom that say "This site is not allowed to save site data on this device". I clicked "allow" on both sites.

Then I went back and started over and it all worked fine.

So - if you are getting this error message in a tab, try allowing whatever Microsoft sites it's trying to load to save data on the device (cookies, I assume).
